Had my first chemo 3 weeks ago and have my wig all ready to wear. It is an NHS one that I got from Hair to Ware in Ware Hertfordshire. Pat the lady that runs the shop was fantastic, she made sure I had exactly what I wanted. She has a hairdresser in the shop who cut the fringe and made sure I knew exactly how to wear the wig. She was great. They both have all kinds of good advice and I would recommend them to anyone. I put my wig on to show family without telling them and they all just thought I had had my hair cut. The appoinment was arranged through the NHS but the service was as good as you would get anywhere. You don’t need to be an NHS patient to go there though.
Hi,
I bought my wig from wigsandpieces.com and as wigs go for £90.00 it was ok but even after parting with my cash I have never worn it. I thought at the time I may need it and it was a just in case buy. I had long blonde hair and actually after having the fright of waking up like the bearded lady I found being bald quite a freeing experience.
My wig on the other hand has been a source of entertainment, everyone I know has sported it for a short while even my greyhound has worn it, he looks like a afghan hound! Keep smiling everyone.

for carrieann…and anyone else
I bought a wig online from Trendco. I didn’t like it but made a trip to the Trendco shop in Brighton where I bought a different wig and had it cut…I am really really pleased with it…one of the cheapest they do…around £80 and the cut was free. I wear my hair short and have found getting a short wig which doens’t make me look like I am in drag a real problem. But Tia from Trendco with a cut is great.

Hi Everyone,
I finally made the effort of buying a wig as now I know I will be going in and out of chemo for the rest of my life I wondered if it was an oppurtunity to ring some changes in my life and enjoy new hair without the hassle… So, today it arrived, and seriously, it’s looks like I put a ginger cat on my head! I think it’s because there is just so much damned hair on it. It cost me 120quid, I do like the colour but there just seem to be too much of it. Can I ask those of you who have got wigs, do you go and have them cut to suit you a bit better, should that be done by a wig specialist?? Any advice would be grarefully received, or I will need to ship the cat back to where I bought it and my head will freeze!!!
Thanks in advance
Nikki
PS, Gilly, I have Afghan Hounds, they tried to nick the new purchase and play with it, I think my middle girl wanted to mother it!!
Hello Nikki
As some have said the wigs are very full. I went to my hairdresser who had someone trained to cut wigs and he cut loads out of it. It was so much better that people just thought I had a new hairstyle as colour was a good match. Only problem now is that my hair is coming in very dark, totally different from my old colour and harder to disguise as new hairstyle!!
The wig certaiinly keeps your head warm in this weather and no bad hair days. Best of luck with the hairdressers you will see a great difference I am sure. It is scary though if you have spent quite a bit on it.
Flora
wigs straight from the shop are the stuff of weeping nightmares as far as I’m concerned, particularly as someone with short very definitely not femmy hair.
In my experience you just have to get a wig cut. Recently I brought a great pretty cheap wig from Trendco in Brighton…about £80 and had it cut by a stylist there…I really like it…more than my first (also cut by haridresser) wigs which cost much more.
Jane
Sorry…seem to be repeating myself on this thread.
Hi, thanks Jane and Flora, appreciate your advice, so the cat needs a trim… I thought it was just me being over sensitive about the darn thing! I am going to a specialist to try out some wigs when I am over this chemo, will take it with me and ask her to reccomend someone. Must say, it’s a bit of a worry when they cost so much, one snip and it’s ruined!!
Cheers

Oh lord, my long-awaited wig is due to drop through the door tomorrow, and was quite looking forward to it, not so sure now! Bet it looks like a pile of straw, having read all these comments, and that bloke on the car insurance advert with the wig on has just come on the telly again!
HAHA Jaq, I hope it doesn’t get you the reaction mine did this morning… I was so excited… and then… eeeeek! However, advice seems to have them trimmed down a bit, so hopefully this will fix my particular problem!!
Good luck with your unveiling!!
Nikki
Got everything at the ready, two new woolly hats, awaited wig, false eyelashes and then somebody told me that you lose some fingernails too, WHAT?, how will I type on my new chrimbo pressie laptop that came today? Gonna look like an extra from Spooks/some criminal mugshot from Crimewatch! Can’t stop looking in mirrors for first hair to drop, had first chemo on Monday.
Soooo, did the wig arrive?? What were your thoughts??? C’mon jaq!
The hair loss hasn’t started for me yet, expecting it next week, but have a pretty severe haircut anyhow, so dont think most will notice for a little while! They will notice my wig more I think.
Nikki
I’ve been told they have a hairdresser at my hospital who cuts the wigs for you and apparantly, she does ‘young and funky’ styles (according to my bcn),might be worth checking if your hospitals offer the same service??
Well, Nikki, wig wasn’t too bad at all, even got nice highlights. (I’ve put this on another thread, so sorry for boring you peoples!). My youngest bought me a black sequinned beret and when I plonked that on top of the wig, I reckon I could have gone out and earned a shilling! Looked like an old tom!
Oh crikey, what an image!!! an old tom, that did make me laugh Jacq! Well I have had my ginger tom cat cut, and it does looks MASSES better, even fooled a freind I have not seen in weeks into thinking it was actually my hair. Also the lovely lady had ordered in some wigs for me to try, have ordrered a really chic bob, always wanted one but never had the patiance to grow it though. Onwards and upwards!
Nikki
Be careful then Nikki, that’s what mine is - a chic bob - just hold back on the ooh-la-la beret! x Jacq x
Ohhh, I consider myself warned Jacq, no sparkly berets for me! See, this site is soooo useful
Got the wig tonight, I love it. Have tried to keep it on for a few hours and it’s giving me a bit of a headache is only downside. Guess I need to get used to the pressure on my head!
