Work & radio

Hi
My diagnosis was Dcis with 2.5mm invasive high grade tumour. Ive had 3 lumpectomies/shaves for clear margins and now its time for radio!

I had my CT planing scan last week and my radiotherapy starts on the 6th September for 5 days (not incl. the weekend) I’m having whole breast radiotherapy.
Can anyone tell me if they were able to work during or after treatment ?
I work on a computer doing engineering design at home and office. I’m wondering about the fatigue part !
Thanks

I had daily radiotherapy for 20 doses. I had my radiotherapy at 830 am and was back at work just after 9. I was weary towards the end of it, but I not enough to stop work. Best wishes

Hi martha3, I had 5 sessions started on the Wednesday and finished following Tuesday (weekend off). My work automatically gave me the time off. The first 2 sessions were okay but I was very tired over the first weekend. I just had plenty rest and felt better on the Monday. I got very tired again over the next couple of sessions. I think travelling had a lot to do with it as over an hour each way. You say you work from home so you might be able to dip in and out if able. Hope it goes well x

I had fifteen sessions of radiotherapy. I worked throughout, though often had a short nap when I got home. The hardest part for me was travelling to and from the hospital and having to work out what time to leave each day. My appointments were around lunchtime, but never at exactly the same time, so I couldn’t get into a routine at all.

Wishing you all the best with your treatment.

Hi @martha3

Personally I had 15 sessions at the end of 2021 and took a further six weeks off work post radiotherapy which took my total time off work to six months. I was advised the fatigue is cumulative and usually peaks around 2 weeks after treatment finishes.

I was fortunate enough to be able to afford the time off and heeded the advice of my oncologist (similar age to me and her husband does the same job as me) which was “take as much time as you need and only think about going back when you are crawling the walls and there’s nothing else you’d rather be doing”.

I appreciate we are all unique in our approaches to work and breast cancer treatment, but I was very glad that I took that time for my head to catch up with everything that I’d been through from diagnosis to end of treatment. I’ve been back since January 2022 and enjoying my job more than ever

AM xxx

I must admit its the mental toll it has taken on me, like lots of people on this journey.
Thank you x

I had 5 sessions, if I had to work I don’t think it would have been a problem. I developed an itchy rash, which lasted a couple of weeks & a burn mark. I suffer the odd day of fatigue, still, but all have been manageable. On the fatigue days you may have to take more breaks.
