Hi I wonder if anyone can help me I’m due to start chemotherapy next week I work in a primary school on the playground for an hour at lunch times I’d like to carry on working on days when I feel ok is this something I can do or do I need to avoid being around large group of children
Thank you
I am a primary teacher and was told school and chemotherapy do not mix because of the risk of infection. You should ask your oncologist about this.
Hello jazjoste
Thanks for posting
Its understandable you’d like to continue your usual routine as much as possible during chemotherapy. You may be able to continue to work in the playground, but it does depend on how the chemotherapy affects you. You may feel well but chemotherapy can affect the immune system making you more a risk of infection.
As @heya_25 Do speak to your oncologist or one of your treatment team to find out when in your treatment cycle you may be more at risk and if they feel you can work at the school.
Your workplace can make reasonable adjustments so you may be able to continue working at the school but in a role that doesn’t involve as much contact with the children if your team advice against this.
