WORKING PEOPLE/OH WORKING - YOU CAN GET TAX CREDITS

moneysavingexpert.com/family/benefits-check

Just want to make everyone aware that if you or your OH are working you could still be entitled to tax credits even if you’ve got no kids.

You are classed as disabled if you are having cancer treatment, which bumps up your entitlement.

Do the above check - I did and what it said I could get, we got. You could get as much as £80 a week, so it’s not peanuts and definitely worth checking out if your income is less than £70k a year.

It’s worth the time it takes to check. Doesn’t take long to get it either.

Good Luck - I thought tax credits were only for people with kids and it’s not.
I wasn’t told about tax credits when I claimed benefits or by the advisor I spoke with at Macmillan.

Thanks for posting this - unfortunately we’re not entitled to anything else, but on top of my OHs income I get DLA and ESA so we’re okay  I’ve always found benefits are not very forthcoming…

Hi EK, thanks for this and I wish I had known about this in December, it looks like I could get £88 pw!

Thanks again

Hi also u can get it back dated if u write and ask them and explain the situation it’s worth a letter

I’ll give them a ring tomorrow, if I can afford to, lol.
I don’t think we can get anything, never bloody have done so far hense my money stopping today.

Daisygirl - if you get that then that’s fantastic and very good karma for me  LOL. With the backdating thing, I tried asking for backdating saying that I wasn’t told about tax credits by anyone and I’d asked benefits what I was entitled too etc, they wouldn’t backdate me due to ignorance. I went 4 months without knowing since diagnosis. But you never know… worth asking.
I’ll be dead chuffed for anyone who manages to get some benefits based on me posting ::wink:

Eltiks - Depends on incomes, but it is sh*t when you’ve paid in so much to a system that when something like this happens, you aren’t automatically entitled to help unless you’re on the breadline.
They also don’t take into account any debts you may have that still have to be paid.
If we didn’t have so much debt we’d have been alright, but as it stands, even with ESA and Tax Credits, we’re managing on £60 a week to buy all our food and household expenses.

I’m Self employed and my partner has a low paid job but I tried this and I have to put last years net profit before tax in, so no joy for me… Back to work I go asap :frowning:

Oh it’s so unfair when you’re self employed it’s criminal.

My OH was self employed for 2 years and then couldn’t get ANYTHING, despite earning naff all. So unfair. It’s b*llocks actually.
People should be rewarded for working.

PS, MAKE SURE YOU PUT DISABLED because if you don’t then it could come back as being due nothing when actually you are.
When I first did this check I thought I’m not disabled and got nothing. Then I tried to find out what classes as disabled, rang them, they said if you are going through cancer treatment you are disabled. Then suddenly, low and behold, entitled to some extra money.

EK - to be honest I was a bit surprised but I am going to ring them tomorrow and see what is what! If I am entitled I will definitely push for it to be back dated!

Do you happen to know if 5 years of Tamoxifen is classed as treatment or is it just whilst you are undergoing surgery, chemo & rads?

Thanks again for this
DaisyGirl xx

El kat I was told because I’m not working even though I get dla and my oh does work and I don’t they won’t let me have the dla element

I don’t think tamoxifen is classed as treatment but don’t know for sure.

Laura - I don’t understand what you’ve said there at all, sorry :frowning:

DG - I’m going to be sooooo chuffed for you if you can get £88 a week. I got exactly what the link said I’d get by the way, because me and OH thought “yeah, fat chance” but we did. They wouldn’t give us a backdate though because just because you didn’t know is not a reason, apparently. Which is very unfair, because they’ll happily take money off you if they’ve not charged you enough tax in the past by mistake (ahem, but it is true)

Let me know what they say won’t you, as some of them on those lines, despite working for Inland Revenue, do talk cr*p and a lot don’t understand the intricacys of cancer.

im slightly confused. I am scheduled for more surgery at the end of the year (my 7th op!) and am apparently now registered disabled at work, much to my amazement - i do front line policing!! would this mean im classified as disabled for tax credit purposes? I feel a fraud saying im disabled when i have a son who has cerebral palsy but if it means i can claim some extra cash then im all for it!!

do you know you are also entitled to a blue bade for parking whilst you are a chemo patient. every little helps.

No i’m not!

Everyone who has cancer and is undergoing treatment is classed as disabled. I don’t know if you’d get anything because it depends on your other financial situation, try the link, put that you are disabled and see what it says, then ring the tax office. xxxx

I’m totally ALL for getting all the benefits you can - if we’ve worked and we have cancer it is NOT scrounging and why should idle sods who can’t be bothered get help and people who are genuinely ill and WANT to work cant?

DO IT.

You’re not entitled to a blue badge if you’ve got primary cancer that hasn’t spread.

I am self employed (a new business and yet to break even), and I was worried when I got diagnosed with a recurrence (6 weeks ago - first was 2009) how I was going to manage financially. My only child gets DLA. My OH has moved in to help me out - although he has not worked for 7 months and is still looking.

I have just have a bilateral DIEP - nearly 3 weeks ago - but as my job is buying and selling on the internet, I can carry on working. Mostly from bed!

I have just completed a new claim for TC as OH moved in - although it makes no difference financially as he is no longer in receipt of JS. There was a question on the form about me being disabled - but as I do not get any benefits for me (90 days to apply for DLA?), I put no. But I have no idea what treatment plan lays ahead until the path report is in.

Was that a mistake to put no? x

Hi - I asked the same question, am I disabled? The answer was YES whilst on Chemo/Rads but don’t take my word for it, speak to them and then confirm what they say via the directgov.com website and look under the definition of disabled. x
