Worried after GP appointment

I have found a lump in my breast. My GP said she is worried about it as it seems to have a jagged edge. She said she had another lady like this and it was cancer. I’m now waiting to go to the breast clinic for all the tests, but I already feel like she has diagnosed me and there is no hope at the breast clinic. Just feel very low.

Hi @yankeedoo it nice to meet you, sorry that it has to be here  Breast cancer can’t be diagnosed until you’ve had a biopsy done and this will be done at your breast clinic appointment. It’s going to be lots of waiting and worrying I’m afraid but please don’t think the worst yet. Big hugs

Thank you. I wish I could stop dwelling on what she said. Thank you for your kind words. It means a lot.

My heart goes out to you because it’s just awful but what you are feeling is completely normal. I found that distraction was key. The busier I am, the less time I sit wondering

Yes I have kept myself busy at work today which has helped a lot. Thankfully my breast clinic referal isn’t too far away so I will have answers good or bad soon. Thank you again for replying to me, it’s really helped me this evening.

Hey @yankeedoo about 80% of biopsies for breast cancer come back negative, so having a lump isn’t automatically sinister. Lumps could be a cyst, fibroadenoma, fat necrosis, lipoma, papilloma or several other, slightly rarer, things. Alas, everybody who has been there will tell you that the shock of being told you should get your breasts looked at by a BC clinic really knocks you for six and then, the wait for the results, which can take a couple of weeks, is excruciating. But, whatever the outcome, in many ways, you’re going through the worst bit now. Your GP could really work on the old bedside manner - GPs are not specialists in this area and comparing two patients almost anecdotally is very unfair on you. A simple “let’s get you checked out to be on the safe side” would have sufficed. Keep posting here if you need a bit of support, let us know how you get on.

Hi yankeedoo,

Thanks for posting. It’s understandable you are feeling very low following your recent appointment with your GP. Waiting for a breast clinic appointment and further assessment can be hard, particularly when your GP sounded worried. As @foxgem says your feelings are normal and distraction and keeping busy can help while you wait.

@tigress has also responded to your post and as she says until the area of concern has been investigated, and you have received your results, you won’t know the cause of the lump you have found. She also mentions that there are other causes of lumps in the breast that are benign (not cancer).
