Worried of Bristol

I know I have posted on here a couple of times and each time people have been lovely.
so back I am again…
I had my first FEC chemo treatment on monday, so far apart from stomach pains, feeling a little fatigued and my taste buds being totally messed up already, I’m doing ok… Hope everyone is fighting fit!
Today we have hit a snag and now my panic buttons are being hit constantly… My 20 yo daughter, who still lives at home and was hoping to help out as much as possible, has been feeling poorly to say the least, so my eldest son took her to the Dr’s this afternoon. The Dr took one look down her throat and said oh my god thats the worst I’ve ever seen!!! Apparently she has the worst tonsillitis they have ever seen and she may also have another problem a cyst which she might have to have an op on… They also informed her that I should call my chemo team and tell them. So I did and the news is not good… They said that she is to be quarantened and I am to have no contact even to being in the same room as her… The trouble is I’ve already been in close contact with her  she is my baby girl for crying out loud, she loves cuddles when she feels poorly… So now she is confined to her bedroom, with no company, feeling like rubbish and I cant help her. Plus we are all on tentahooks worrying about whether I will come down with this… Does anyone else have any experience of this sort of thing???
Im so scared on so many fronts…
I also dont know how to go about getting the wig on the nhs… Or where to look for a scarf? Any ideas?

Loads of love to you all

hi sheri - you poor things!! my kids have had coughs etc since I’ve had my first chemo but so far I’ve been ok - touch wood - so hopefully you’ll be ok - spose its just a question of seeing how it goes unfortunately and it’ll be so hard for both of you…(((hugs)))
try website chemochick dot co dot uk and bohemia dash fashions dot co dot uk - hope its ok to do it like that as its not a link as such?? I’ve liked the service on both, with the hats you can wear a thin scarf round them or through the loops and the pre-tied scarves are handy round the house etc…keep positive if you can and post away! For a wig, try speaking to your BCN or oncology dept. In my hospital, there is a wig section within the prosthetics dept. I just had to ring up to make an appointment, I tried on various wigs, made my choice, they ordered one in for me, then had to go back a few days later to pick it up. If you have the prescription exemption card (which you are entitled to as a cancer patient) then the wig is free.

For a scarf, I found suitable ones in an ethnic type shop - the sort that smells of incense as you walk in, and is located on a side street. You can also try headcovers dot com. It is an American website, but had a large selection. I bought a very useful exercise hat from there.

If you are having chemo at the Bristol oncology centre, look to the left of the front doors where there is an information centre. They sell lots of lovely scarves and hats really cheaply.

I expect you have been given info about checking your temperature while on chemo and what to if you have any concerns. I caught an infection while on chemo and had to be admitted for IV antibiotics and even blood transfusions. Not habit forming, but it was ok in the end.

Good luck

Hi Sheri,
Sorry to hear of your predicament and sorry your daughter’s poorly and quarantined. Although of course you have to be really careful about catching infections I would say that because you’ve only had one chemo so far the risk of your immune system being suppressed is lower than if you’d had several chemo treatments. I’m not trying to belittle the risk but trying to reassure you that hopefully you should be ok and be strong enough to fight it if you do get something. The more chemo you have the harder your immune system gets knocked.
Really hope your daughter feels better soon and that you continue to do ok and try not to worry hard as that can be. It’s impossible to stay away from every germ. Just do the best you can and make sure you take your temperature regularly just in case it goes up.
Take care,
Anne x
