hi ive just turned 40 but have been having regular mammograms since 30 as im high risk. Had my mammogram in february when i was told my nodes were inflamed but everything was ok. I then got a letter saying i had to have an mri scan which i have just had this week. I can feel a small pea like hard lump in my left breast and my armpit keeps swelling and is very tender. Im really worried now but have been told i may have to wait 6 - 8 weeks for my results! Would appreciate any feedback thanks
Hi Showzer, I know the waiting can be so agonizing and stressful can’t it! I’m one of the world worst worriers so I’m not just going to pat you on the back and say ‘chin up’ but at the moment you’ve done everything you can by having regular check ups. The MRI is the best thing to have as you know all the other tests can be unreliable with being younger. If it’s any help, try to focus on the fact that most lumps turn out to be nothing sinister and you’re regularly checked over so if anything is changing, they’ll get it quickly.
I’m sure you’ll get loads of ladies tell you the same thing so try to keep positive and the very best of luck with your results.

hi,
I am no expert but the 6-8 weeks sounds very odd. Have you talked to your GP about it. They might be able to get more information and find out exactly what the concern is.Perhaps they think cancer is unlikely and that is why it is taking so long.
You talk about your armpits keep swelling. From what little I know cancer grows very slowly and does not go away, so perhaps your nodes are swelling to fight an infection.
If you have not been to your GP yet I would go. If you ring up and say you have a lump the receptionist tend to give you a quicker appointment. Then the GP can look at the lump, feel your glands find out more info about the test you have had and either re-assure you that they are thinking of cysts or infection, or if they are concerned they must be able to speed the results up.
Whatever you decide to do, keep coming on here for support, its the only way to keep sane whilst waiting for results
I agree, 6-8 weeks does seem to be a bit of a wait. Who told you the wait was going to be this long? Speak to your GP and get him or her to chase it, the worrying is the pits, isn’t it.
The helpline is open until 2pm today so you’d still have time to have a chat with them, I suggest you give them a ring and talk it through with them too.
thanks for all the feedback nice to know there are people who understand out there! My left breast also feels like its burning alot of the time and my left arm aches alot, which i think may have something to do with the swelling maybe? My mum, aunt and cousin all have had breast cancer, my cousin died of the disease when she was around 36yrs old which is why im classed as high risk
hi all, just though id update you on the latest. Went back to my gp on friday, where she examined me again and says there is definately a lump and swelling. She is going to chase up the mri results and has also requested that i have some blood tests done and that i have to go straight back if i notice a rash or my breast feels hot to the touch. So i feel at least like something is going to be done and i will find some answers and soon hopefully as the waiting is torture!!
