worried

Hi my name is Kay I am 51, I found a small pea size lump about 6 weeks ago, checked again and its still there, then checked other breast and found a flat lump about 2cm big, have made appt with gp but am bit worried. Keep telling myself its nothing, but dont understand why lumps are so different. Anyone had same scenario?

Hi Kay,
There are so many kinds of lump and bump, and there’s no way of knowing what they are without getting them checked out. The GP should refer you on to the breast clinic within a couple of weeks. I think the stats are that 4/5 lumps are nothing to worry about. If there is a problem, then you’ll get treated and the vast majority of bc is treatable. So you’ve done absolutely the right thing.
It’s horrible waiting around and wondering, there are lots of people on here who are either in the same boat or who have been there already. Try not to look stuff up unless it’s on a reputable site such as this one - there’s loads of nonsense and scary stuff on the net that really isn’t helpful. It’s a good idea to call the helpline if you’re concerned and worried about what to expect, they’re wonderful!
Stay on here and let us know how you get on.
Wishing you lots of luck, big hugs
xx

Hi bubbletrouble thanx for your comments and the hugs. Been to Dr today, she dismissed the bigger lump as breast tissue, but wants to see me again in couple of weeks re the small lump. Says could be a blocked duct, but if no change when I go back wants to refer me as says it could be cause for concern. Not sure if I feel better or not.

Any advice. I told my brother about the lump and visit to the Dr, emphasised no need to worry. But he has now told my parents who have told all my brothers and sisters. They are all in a panic. I have told them all nothing to worry about. problem is I havent told my sons and I dont want them worrying,I am now worried in case they hear about it. What should I do. I dont have a partner to talk to so would appreciate any advice.

It can be a 2 week wait for a referral to the breast clinic. So if you add on another 2 weeks of waiting for another GP appt that adds up to a whole month full of worry. You could go back to your GP and politely ask if you could be referred straightaway or get a second opinion? I’m only thinking what I would do, but everyone is different. Although this is scary stuff remember 9 out of 10 lumps investigated are not cancer. Having said that every lump should be investigated without delay. Your peace of mind is very important right now. Please keep posting and let us know how you are doing.
Good luck!!!

hello kay , if your un happy waiting 2 weeks pop back and tell the gp you would rather be seen in the breast clinic for piece of mind, but remember 9 out of every 10 breast lumps are NOT cancer, and as for your brother go easy on him he is just concerned for you xx

quite agree with all the posts above, its the waiting and worrying thats the worse bit, ring your gp again. depending on the type of practice it is they might not even need you to go back in to see them, they might just refer you after checking with your doctor. My practice did that when i realised they had not got my husbands referal right. I spoke to the medical secretaries, they checked with the doc and then got things moving for me.

If the doctor decides its a non urgent referal I am not even sure that you get to the breast clinic as quickly as 2 weeks, so its important to get things rolling as quickly as possible.

Hopefully the 4 hours you spend at the breast clinic will be a compete waste of time and you will come out smiling about all the fuss over nothing, but the lead up to the diagnoses is one of the most stressfull times there is, and you do not want to extend it any longer than necessary.

Hi
I agree with the other comments. I would not wait. I had a much better experience as my GP has a breast nurse care background and her precise words to me were ‘I don’t have Xray eyes’. She referred me immediately. My case was slightly unusual because I had a trauma injury and she and the specialist were not particularly concerned. However when they checked this injury (which was nothing more than a bruise) they found a very small, early stage lump underneath. I have now had a lumpectomy and all the test results which have been excellent. Whilst waiting for all this to take place I have been worried sick and I have been lucky in that the waiting has been as short as it possibly could have been. Your diagnosis could end up being excellent but if you end up waiting longer than you need to its your sanity that might need treating instead. Go back to your GP and demand a referral immediately!

I absolutely agree - insist on a referral. I certainly couldn’t wait another 2 to 4 weeks. I’m only having to wait 5 days, and that’s bad enough! All the best, and please let us know how you get on. x

Yes me too - you’re entitled to a referral. My Mum was told by a GP that her 3 lumps were fine, but they weren’t so she had a delay of 6 months before anyone diagnosed and treated her.
As for your family worrying, sit them down and just explain that 4/5 lumps are nothing to worry about, and that you need their support while you wait. If it is bad news, you will get treated, and you’ll all cope with it. You have to try to deal with things as they happen, hard though that is.
Lots of love, and do insist with your GP
xx

Hi everyone thanks for all your kind comments and advice. Sorry I havent been in touch things got a bit hectic with the early arrival of my new grandaughter! Good luck Kay. Be prepared to have to do some more waiting, not all clinics give you results the same day as your tests, I had to wait a week for mine, though others have had results on the day.

Wishing you lots of luck tomorrow and let us know how you get on. I got my appointment today as well but not until 4th july!!

Thanx LucyC, sorry you have to wait a bit, hopefully everything will be ok. I will let u know how I get on. K x
