Hi emz1989,

Thank you for your post.

We hear from many people who experience side effects including nausea and joint pain from treatments such as denosumab (xgeva). As you started your injections 3 months ago, it’s understandable you want to know how long these symptoms may last.

Joint pain and stiffness may affect the hands, arms, knees, feet, pelvic and hip bones, or back which can often affect daily life. Regular pain relief and regular exercise such as walking or swimming may help to relieve pain and joint stiffness for some people. Others find that complementary therapies such as acupuncture can help.

It is not uncommon to experience nausea with some breast cancer treatments and it’s understandable you would ask if this were normal. We would suggest you speak to your breast care nurse or treatment team about this as they can then assess the cause and if it’s related to the denosumab.

Side effects can vary in how long they last, which is why it’s always important to talk to your treatment team as soon as you can especially if your symptoms are affecting your daily life. They will be best placed to assess your symptoms and can talk you through how best to manage these.

We offer a range of free supportive services for anyone who has had a diagnosis of breast cancer which you may be interested in. They include face to face and online courses and events.
