YOUNGER MALE RELATIVE WITH MASS
YOUNGER MALE RELATIVE WITH MASS I HAVE A MALE RELATIVE AGED 26 WHO FOUND A LARGE LUMP OVER A MONTH AGO ON HIS BREAST.HE WENT TO HIS GP WHO WAS CONCERNED THAT THE LUMP WAS GROWING IN SIZE AND HE ADMITTED HE THOUGHT IT WAS CANCER. MY FAMILY MEMBER WAS THEN SENT TO THE BREAST CLINIC ON THURSDAY.HIS APPOINTMENT CARD THAT HE RECIEVED STATED HE WOULD RECIEVE A SCAN AND A BIOPSY BUT WHEN HE WENT TO THE SPECIALIST THIS DID NOT OCCUR.THE SPECIALIST LOOKED AT THE LUMP AND ALSO EXAMINED IT.HE SAID HE THOUGHT IT WAS A TUMOUR/CYST BUT THAT IT WAS NON-MALIGNANT AND DID NOT HAVE TO BE OPERATED ON.MY RELATIVE ASKED IF HE COULD HAVE THE OPTION TO HAVE THIS REMOVED AND THE SPECIALIST STATED NO AND SAID HE DID NOT NEED FURTHER TESTS.HE ALSO STATED AS HE IS OVERWEIGHT IT WILL BE MORE COMMON FOR HIM TO DEVELOP THESE MASSES. UNDERSTANDBLY MY RELATIVE IS EXTREMLY CONFUSED AS TO HOW THE SPECIALIST DETECTED THIS IS NON-MALIGNANT WITHOUT FURTHER TESTS.SHOULD HE SEEK A SECOND OPINION?OR SHOULD WE BE HAPPY WITH THE INFORMATION GIVEN. MANY THANKS

Gynecomastia Hi Therese
It may be Gynecomastia that is the problem. This is often associated with young males as well as older men. it is due to hormonal changes and is benign.
Perhaps being overweight has made the “mass” seem much bigger than it is?
I think you should ask if Gynecomastia is the cause and then be releived at that diagnosis. He should not be left without an understandable explanation of what’s happening to him. The letter from his consultant to the GP might be much more indicative of what the mass is as well.
Anyway, I do hope that your worry goes away.
best wishes
Bill
THERESE I’d scream and holler until I had a biopsy done. Anyone telling your rel it’s OK without checking is of dubious value. A biopsy is reliable- tell him to DEMAND one. best wishes, dilly
hi therese
i agree completely with dilly, regardless of what surgeon thought it was ,he should have done a biopsy to confirm what he thought and to reassure your relative. maybe gp could help push matters for you. i think a good gp would be very surprised and concerned at what has happened and will want confirmation as well. i always thought that docs would not be willing to give firm diagnosis without biopsy or other diagnostic tests . keep fighting till you get answers ,everyone has the right to peace of mind where it can reasonably be given. it might be worth while to see what the nhs guidlines and rules are in this case. it would probably be best ask for a different surgeon as well.
