I wanted to know the dandruff answer too Jibby. It is one of the few things I have never had in my life! So it would not surprise me to get it now. But as ypu say, hair would be great, with whatever problem.
Topper - eyebrows and lashes are NOT curly! Sadly really. Will let you know how the headhair goes. Aren’t we all glad to be on the gaining hair side of this game, rather than losing it? Remember that?
I use E45 shampoo for Dry hair. It is for dry, itchy flaky & dandruff scalp. Its really good.
I do agree with the coment about no oily scalp…mine seems to never have any moisture to it. Also, I dont have to use underarm sprays or anything, i dont seem to be needing too.
I have dry skin which hubby says looks a bit scaly on the top of my head and have been putting Vaseline on it ! but it’s not made much difference so will get the E45 shampoo tomorrow.
Topper - you say about your hair being underlayed with brown stubble. So do you have the grey and the brown is coming through (am I being a bit thick here !) - if so maybe there’s hope for me yet . Mine seemed be a bit auburn then I thought it looked dark and now its like a silver grey. Fingers crossed eh !
Trust me to have something which doesn’t seem that common!
Dilys - if you’ve never had dandruff you probably wont get it now. I had it before BC but not as much. I read that chemo can alter the bacteria in the gut making it easier for bad bacteria to flourish and develope into a condition called Candida Albacans. I’m going to do more research but I think that bad dandruff is one of the signs.
Lynne - how long is your hair? Is the E45 shampoo gentle on the scalp - no stinging? My scalp seems very sensitive - combing/brushing makes it feel sore.
Liz - have you always had dry skin or is it because of the chemo? I used to have hair/skin that was prone to be greasy but now it has gone very dry. I use Vaseline alot but I’ve never thought of putting it on my head - I might try it around the hairline though.
Thank you all for your replies. This thread about hair is really good and it seems to be developing into it’s own category!
Hope you are right about dandruff! When I need it I am going to try that E45 shampoo then. Right now I just roll over my scalp with soap! I always had skin and hair prone to greasiness but that doesn’t seem to have changed. Can’t remember who said it but it would br GREAT never to have underarm hair again, wouldn’t it?
Has anyone else got patchy hair. Mine has come back loads at the sides and is coming at the front but there are still bald patches in the middle of my head where the hair is growing very slowly. I feel a bit desperate as I’m going to center parks at beginning of Feb and really don’t want to have to wear a swimming cap! I probably will just go ‘commando’ (my head I mean) and get on with it but this was meant to be a holiday when it was all my treatment was over but my hair won’t be ok. Grrrr is very annoying I am soooo sick of my scarves.
I’m glad you asked about patchy hair. I seem to be thinner on top but more so on the crown so much so it looks like a bald piece. The rest is growing but white/grey.
I keep massaging it in the hope it will grow ! must say though thats the part where my scalp is very dry.
Jibby - my skin has always been okay. A bit dry on the legs but okay everywhere else and never had dandruff in my life. I see other people with their hair growing and dark and that’s what I want ! Should be grateful for it coming back I know.
I used Neutrogena T Gel shampoo for sensitive scalp and found it very gentle.
I washed and conditioned my scalp every day while I had no hair. I used the Neutrogena shampoo and Simple conditioner - both very good. Once my hair started to come back I tried Lush ‘New’ solid shampoo which is supposed to promote growth where people have lost hair for ‘hormonal reasons’. I’m not sure if it helps or not but it smells so lovely that I’m still using it.
I had my last chemo on 1st May 2007. I had 3 x FEC and 3 x Taxotere. My hair started to come back - very very slowly - after my second Taxotere. It was patchy for ages and I didn’t feel comfortable going without wigs and hats until about the end of October. I’ve now got about 2 inches of hair. I think it’s been slow to grow because I’m also on Herceptin and Aromasin, but I’m not complaining - it’s marvellous to have hair again.
Thanks so much. I keep working it out, and you have confirmed it here, that six months is about the norm for being able to go without hats/wigs. Thanks for the hair treatment tips. And enjoy your hair!
My hair is still bald in places but some hair. I have used E45 throughout my chemo as I was recommended it from another lady on here and ive found it really really good. Ive never had dandruff but my head was a little flaky and this has sorted it out.
Lizzie Yes I had white and grey but is now starting to come through as brown underneath. Hair is mostly Ok at 1 cm on the top and crown but rather bleak on the sides.
Mind you did you see David Beckham in the newspaper this week…Yes we have set a trend and he is following!!!
Dilys - you’re not being disgusting !!! Mine isn’t growing a lot down there !!
Topper - you have given me hope. How long was it growing before it starts changing? I finished my last tax 28th November but it had started growing a little before that. Other people at the McMillan Centre I go to have dark hair straightaway and growing fast.
I thought that about Mr Beckham - doesn’t he look gorgeous. My hormones kick in now and again !!!
Dilys- I think I might have three down below hairs!!!
Liz - the white hair was a couple of weeks before the dark. It is getting quite thick now on top. It seems to be noticable growing every day. I started videoing my hair’s progress from my first chemo, through my haircut and shaving and it regrowing. It is entitled " This is your hair" sung to the tune of “This is your life”!
I have only one hormone left now but the gorgeous Mr Beckham is able to stir it!!
It only takes one hormone ! Mr Beckham watch out !! He can stir mine any time ! Do you think he would be interested in a 53 year old !
What a good idea about your video. I seem to have bald patch on the crown but I’m sure it will grow. A friend with BC has shaved her hair off again to help with the growth. Her hairdresser friend said it would do it good. I am now thinking of doing it - if I can pluck up the courage after waiting for hair for the last few months.
A hair growing video! What a great idea. Never thought of that. And Liz, Mr Beckham is already taken by this nearly 56 year old (provided he keeps his mouth shut)! I think this thread almost started with wondering if shaving it off made it grow faster, but no one plucked up the courage to try. Certainly not me anyway.
Well done on the down below ones Karen. Mine are so smooth and lovely. Much nicer than the old wirey ones! There have to be some benefits to all this.
Shaving of the hair!!! With 1 cm I am too far down the line to shave it off again. Maybe the sides though, A Mohican may be the thing… Keeps the top of the head warm whilst encouraging regrowth.
Dilys - your are right of course the Kiss and tell thing is a worry. I must also confess to being a smidge older than you so maybe you would steal him away without me getting a look in…I can dream though!!!
I have a friend who phoned last night and has shaved off her fluff - her friend who is a haidresser said it would do it good. Soooooo I am debating whether to do it. My hair at the sides is just short of an inch so I really don’t know what to do. I would like to but after waiting all this time I am finding it hard to decide.
Cecelia - I got a copy of the hair leaflet from the list of publications. They sent it to me and it only took a few days.
Everybody - Victoria hasn’t a chance has she with us 50 somethings after David xx
