April 2024 chemo starters

I’m finding some small clumps of hair coming out today :smiling_face_with_tear: , my wig appointment is next week so any suggestions for beanie/hair covering that don’t look too chemo babe? I’m really not the turban type :woman_with_turban: I’ve put off looking into them in the hope that sticking my head in the sand might work!

Hi @altoan, sorry to read that is happening for you today. Hope you are doing ok?
I’ve bought skull caps from Amazon as they are nice and soft. I’m not really into big turbans/scarfs as it would make me stand out. I quite liked these as they are light for summer. https://amzn.eu/d/bdU4ujk

@altoan I can second the recommendation - I’m already wearing these in bed, and lovely and soft. I understand your issue of not wanting to stand out - it is quite hard to find anything I’d folk aren’t used to seeing you with anything on your head. I’m a runner so outside I get away with baseball caps.

@mlp74 @gromit12 Thank you, I’ll give these a try. It’s not so bad yet, but probably better to get something ready. The idea of something light is appealing, I have hats for running/winter but I’m feeling self conscious about even wearing them - although it’s so windy today that they’d take off anyway! :flushed:

Hi @altoan
I can’t find anything that stops me looking like a cancer patient if I’m honest but I have found wearing a skull cap with a cap over in the same colour is a little less obvious if I’m going for a walk or even out on the front garden , I don’t mind wearing a scarf sometimes, I have a macmillian at my hospital who give hats fot free ( I did give a donation to the charity for mine) but they are very comfortable as I’ve found some of the ones I’ve ordered rub my ears after a while , found a great one on Amazon but can’t wear for too long , I will see if I can find what it’s called
Sending lots of love to everyone

I ordered two of these one fits lovely but one a little tight so might be hit and miss, but with a little ruffling it looks like a normal hat xx

@altoan - sorry to hear your hair is starting to shed. I’m on day 20 and fully expecting mine to start coming out soon. My wig won’t be ready for another two weeks so I’ve ordered a baseball cap with fake hair and fake hair with a headband in the same style as my current hair from headscarvesbyciara.co.uk - she does just headwear too. I’m really pleased with mine - even my family ask if I’m wearing just a hat or my hat with hair :joy:

My local pharmacy has just announced they are doing COVID vaccines- should we be getting one?

Hi @gromit12, my oncologist told me to get any vaccines before chemo started. I got the flu vaccine but didn’t get Covid one x

@altoan my hair started to come out in clumps from Friday, i had already had gotten my hair cut very short before chemotherapy started. I finally got my husband to shave it all off this morning ( number 1) if I even touched it, it was falling out. I feel much better now than looking at the bald patches. I’ve my second cycle on Wednesday, mines 3 weekly xxx

@pollyanna1 I couldn’t get the COVID one as not available, clinics have just opened up. I’ve booked an appointment and check with my oncologist later in week. The NHS website made the booking as someone with weakened immune system. Just not sure if we can have during chemo.

@gromit12 - I was told to get a Covid and flu vaccine before chemo but my doctors can’t do it until 2nd May. I understand that the Covid vaccine is safe to have whilst doing chemo as it’s not a ‘live’ vaccine so doesn’t cause any issues. I’m going to check with my doctor on Wednesday though as I have phone consultation with her.

Yes check with your oncologist, mine had told me to get flu beforehand as it’s a live vaccine. Then again different oncologists have different opinions. Hope you get sorted.

@ivy-cat , I’ve just looked at headscarves by Ciara and there is some really nice ones. I had got a few from Annabandana but headscarves by Ciara has a great choice. I got my wig a few weeks ago, I was told I needed chemotherapy one day and wig shop phoned me 2 days later. I think it depends what trust you’re with xxxx
