April 2024 chemo starters

Oh no, that’s 1 heck off a wait. Did you flash this card ? it states you should have been seen within an hour or am I reading this wrong? I had issues with swelling in my hand 1st time round & they send me to the cancer assessment unit at the western.

Fabulous news on ref the genetics result, such a relief.

How are you now ? xx

@ivegotthis01 I think because the cancer folk and oncologist told me to go to St John’s they don’t have the same system😏 they knew I’d been referred through that and the on call oncologist had phoned the consultant at A&E but still had the same wait. I also overheard someone else who had been told to come in and she was the same.

I got asked three times what was going on and each time I explained I’d been referred…. the doctor the third time said she didn’t know what was wrong and she’d speak to her consultant and when she came back she said the consultant was well aware of it as he’d spoken to the oncologist when I was told to attend via the cancer line. That’s twice now I’ve had a long wait in A&E - last week was when my neutrophils were 0.45 and I felt suddenly bad and was told to go in so I’m going to clarify the process with the oncologist/nurse that phones from the Western General tomorrow just to check how it should work. It’s just the normal A&E doctors too so they don’t have any specialists in oncology at St John’s out of hours I dont think

I’m ok the now thanks. I’ve been putting heat on it and keeping it moving to try help it if it is thrombosis (the doctor really didn’t know what was up as I didn’t have all the symptoms of anything in particular and said they don’t do ultrasounds at weekends to check lol) and have taken my temperature more just in case it’s an infection or something. Hoping it’s just irritated - strange as the cannula was in my hand but it’s closer to my vein at elbow I’m having the issues and swelling

I’m actually lost for words, we are literally getting the same treatments at hospitals about 25mins away from each other & they are treating us so differently. Yes definitely ask what the correct procedure is or if you have transport could you go to the Western if you are unwell again ? Surely they should have been able to do an ultrasound sound no matter what day off the week :face_with_symbols_over_mouth::face_with_symbols_over_mouth::face_with_symbols_over_mouth:

However, I am glad you are feeling better now & hope you get a good night’s sleep, please keep us updated, the nurses will be able to advise more tomorrow - sending hugs xx

@belle1, congratulations on your genetics results and sorry to hear about your arm and hopefully it has settled.
It’s surprising how different each hospital is.
Twice I ended up at A&E after chemo. Phoned my oncology unit and they told me to go to A&E, 1st time was 2 days after chemo had an abscess in breast and as they’d No separate room or cubicle I had to sit in my car for 4 hours in the middle of the night until a surgeon came to look at it. They finally got me a cubicle in children’s for the surgeon to treat it. 2nd time waited in A&E for 3 hours for bloods to come back as had UTI. If anything I’ve noticed going through this is how pressurised the trust I’m under is. Our regional cancer centre is so much different as it has an impatient and outpatient departments. Although I live only 20 miles from it, I don’t fall under that trust.
@ivegotthis01 i must enquire about the card( :crossed_fingers: won’t need it.)
As everyone has said keep sharing positive stories this forum has been amazing for the good and bad times and everything in between :sparkling_heart::sparkling_heart::sparkling_heart:

Morning😊 my arm is still sore but not as swollen or hard today thankfully. Bruised but still no redness so hopefully will continue to settle on its own🤞🏻

Yeah just with my own job I was already aware of services and how stretched they are, so I haven’t wanted to ask much about it whilst at hospital, but I think I’ll just clarify what’s to happen in my area so I know.

I’m the same as you as I live about that distance from our main cancer centre so think it is different too, as part of it is at the hospital I’ve to attend and it’s where I get chemo, but I think it’s just a Monday to Friday thing with no outpatients either.

Well we are going away for 2 nights, and the stress of packing!!:rofl:All the “just in case” stuff, emergency book, wig, waterproof arm cover, head coverings, clothes I can wear with wig that I dont have to pull over my head!! (Learnt that the hard way this week!!). Drinks- as currently so limited in what I want to drink. Medication. And were only going to Weston Supermare!!!:rofl:

This is what we have been given to show in Scotland, not sure if they have similar in your area, always worth asking & definitely keep it with you if you get 1 xx

Have a lovely time away, this sounds like a “normal” holiday packing issue I have :rofl: we normally do scottish lodge stays so we can bring our lab Alfie along as well, I swear he has more things to pack than we do :rofl: & the weather can change so quickly, like today its absolutely pelting it down with rain here

Anyway, enjoy the break xx

Random question, has anybody else had nail growth? My nails never grow and they have never grown so much which seems a bit bizarre as nothing else is growing anywhere if you get my drift? :woman_shrugging:

Hope you have a brilliant time @gromit12

@belle1 i have also had issues with my arm that the cannula is in (they can only use on arm as had complete lymph node removal in other). It was swollen and red looking. It was so bad that I couldn’t get the pre chemo drugs taken on the Friday before the next Monday session) ended up in Ninewells and they managed to get bloods but didn’t seem concerned with my arm. I’m all bruised over my hand and arm where they try to get blood.
Swellings is. Down but still sore and tight inside. Dreading getting bloods done again this Friday!

@elle16 my nails are growing loads! There are ridges in them but just had to file them down (I was a mail biter so Thai is new to me!)

Sending hugs to you all x

Aw sorry to hear about your arm issues too… sounds like a nightmare! I didn’t get a call from oncology today - assuming maybe hospital got muddled due to it being a bank holiday today as she doctor definitely said I would get one. Arm is ok just still bruised and swollen/tender/tight too but it’s no worse and probably a little better with no swelling elsewhere. Hopefully settles🤞🏻fun and games eh😂

@elle16 my nails are growing too but they always sprout!
