AUGUST '17 Chemo Starters

First chemo session went well yesterday.  so far so good, am mouthwashing to try and stave off the threat of ulcers and soreness.

Was dreading going to bed so stayed up late because I haven’t been sleeping (and the steroids make it worse) but slept like a baby apart from waking to use the loo because of all the fluid I drank yesterday.

No nausea or headache, packing the anti-sickness tablets, just feel like I have a mild hangover really - fuzzy head.

Gald you’re doing ok so far Sue58.  Be good and rest up ladies xx

Hi Sue. Unfortunately I have to be admitted for observation and more antibiotics. I’m just waiting for a bed now. xx

Oh no Ali, hope you are OK and get well soon. Xxx

Hi Sue , Helen, Butterfly, Claire, Mary- Kate and Ali, and anybody else I’ve forgotten… Hope your ok ? Well I had a headachy / nausea episode friday night ( I knew my side effects would kick in friday night lol) and felt pretty much the same Saturday morning but once the steroids and sickness tablets kicked in I felt better although still a fuzzy headache which was bearable…!! I’ve woke up after a good 9 hours sleep feeling much more my usual self today although food and drink still has a slightly strange taste… and my hair is looking very lank as I normally wash it every day…trying now to only wash it twice this week…( this is going to be hard !!)
Today I’m to start taking the Filgrastim injections…not looking forward to them as there seems to be some horrible side effects. Anyone had this or do we all take the injection ? Hope everyone is feeling ok today, love and hugs to you all xx

Hi Sue,

Feeling fuzzy today, but if that’s the downside of no nausea I’ll take it! Pills have worked a dream in that respect. I guess the first cycle is a learning curve as to what to expect, and I’m taking it one day at a time.

My daughter is coming to see me today which will be lovely. Must be difficult for her, but I’m sure a lot of hugs will go a long way! For us both ? Have a good day ladies, and look after yourselves. Xx

Hi Sue C. Yes I’m going to try and do the injection myself a bit later today although they havnt given me any alcohol wipes …I’ll just have to make sure its very clean before I stick the needle in lol…!! I’m feeling quiet good today managing to eat well and pottering nicely , so don’t want to put the injection in me till a bit later just in case it reacts badly with me…or causes pain…I’m enjoying to feeling of being near normal. And like Butterfly said the tablets are working a dream on me too… the first chemo is a learning curve and everyone will react differently…the 2nd one I may have more symptoms than this one. And for those that are starting their chemo tomorrow or next week , its not as bad as you think it will be… and the cold cap was much better than expected…whether it saves my hair we will have to see…I havnt washed it yet and it so needs it as it is flat and lifeless…but will do a gentle wash tomorrow… and then I am going to try some wigs on Tuesday, just incase the inevitable hair loss happens.!! Any of you using the paxman cold cap , did they dampen your hair first or just put conditioner on only before the cap went on ? Hugs to everyone x

first cycle of chemo tomorrow?? any advice???

Hi Ali, so sorry to hear you had to be admitted to hospital – I hope you’re able to go home soon, rest well.  How are you doing too Sib?

Hope you’re doing OK after starting this week, Helenp, Sue58, Butterfly, Soworridl and Claire.  Hope any side effects are manageable and not too severe.  It seems like most of us have ended up with that fuzzy head feeling, my District Nurse described it as the ‘Chemo Fog’ which I thought described it quite well!  Mine has mostly gone a week later, feeling not too bad but then completely fatigued when I’ve overdone it. I’ve had all my hair cut short now and picked up my wig – all OK, quite liberating really…

Sue58 – how has your injection been?  I don’t know if everyone has them.  I had to do them and they haven’t been too bad.  Slight aching after I’d done them and I’m quite glad I’ve finished them now – until the next time…  Like you, I had the paxman cold cap too and they only put conditioner on my hair first, didn’t wet it at all.

Hello to Sam too, hope you get your dates to start soon - I know what you mean when you say you want it to start but don’t as well, I felt exactly like that, but hopefully it won’t be as bad as you think.  I also had a picc line fitted and the procedure of fitting was OK.  You soon get used to it being on your arm all the time, slightly gets in the way but makes it easy to give you the drugs and have bloods taken – I don’t know if everyone has them fitted.

Best of luck for starting tomorrow, Fairy and to anyone else starting this week.

Rest well ladies and hugs to all. xx

Hello ladies. I hope you are all doing ok today. Thankfully they have let me out from hospital with a load of antibiotics to take at home. Feeling a bit sorry for myself as my arm is black and blue and sore from blood tests and the 3 attempts to get the canula in and I’m tired as they woke me through the night. Also as they couldn’t pinpoint the cause of the infection it’s possible this might happen after every round of treatment! Can’t fault all the staff in the unit though they were great and were pleased that I went in straight away as it made it easier to treat.

Hi Fairy, good luck for tomorrow x

Glad your home and feeling a bit better Ali. Just take it easy.
I’m day 11 after 1st chemo now and mouth ulcers and nausea gone. A bit easier tired than normal when I do too much but functioning. Managed out of house every day, even if only for short walk with dog, so can’t complain.
None of us choose this path, but we are all going through our daily challenges to reach the end of our treatment and we will support each other every little step.
Hugs and positive thoughts to all amazing August chemo starters?x

Day 5 for me, and have started bleeding. Haven’t had a period since Dec so thought I’d finished with all that? Anyone else had similar issues, not sure if I should be reporting it? Still no nausea, but dealing with continuing chemo fog! Thanks ladies. Xx

I had a small period on day 3/4/5 of my chemo, but was sort of due a period anyway (don’t have regular periods now) so wasnt concerned. They think I’m just perimenopausal at moment. X

todays the day. so scared

Hi Fairy
Honestly there is nothing to be scared of, I promise.
Stay calm, deep breathes…you can do this!
Sue xx

Hope you’re feeling better Ali x

Sending positive vibes. Stay calm the staff are lovely and will explain everything. Let us know how it goes. Sending big virtual hug. Xx

HiEmmadaivies
Hope you are ok! It looks like we have similar diagnostics! I’ve had a lumpectomy and seeing chemo nurse this Weds.
Have you started chemo yet? I have already sorted a wig out to be prepared if needed, but maybe try cold cap.xx

Hi all
How are we all doing today? Fairy how did it go?
Sue xx

Day 4

Awake at 5am.  Feeling less fuzzy today, no nausea really apart from first thing in the morning but am taking the anti-sickness tablets to keep it that way as long as poss. Think I may keep a biscuit next to the bed for tomorrow morning.   Had the last of this cycle’s steroids after lunch today so don’t know what difference I will feel tomorrow, worse or better?  Any ideas?  Am drinking and eating ok, smaller meals than usual and fruit in between.  Hubby is making sure I go out in the big world every day for fresh air and a change of scene, it’s important I think.  Felt a bit sorry myself in the supermarket today seeing everyone going about their daily lives, had a bit of a wobble, but I’ll be fine.  The support and comments on here have been great for me.

Keep smilng xx
