December 2023 chemo starters

1st time lasted 3 days. Nasty taste this time seems worse. I have mouth drops this time for sore mouth which doesn’t taste goid either. I was swilling with salt water 1st time.
Been lying on the sofa most of the day and now I’m off to bed with a dose of paracetamol to try to ease swollen neck and tender ribs.
Let’s see what tomorrow brings.

Goodnight all x

Evening all, I hope everyone is doing ok and had a nice day? Interesting point about the supplements, I had a list for my consultant and he was fine with what I was taking and then also checked again with the oncology pharmacist, isn’t it crazy how advise is different?

Random question, did anyone get any skin tags appear? I have never had any before but 2 have popped up next to each other, just below my collar bone? Very random!

Yes it’s odd how different places give different advice.

On my chemo thread, some had been told to avoid certain foods, whereas my oncologist didn’t mention anything about food. When I asked they did say, to avoid live food such as live yoghurt and anything undercooked.

Just about through my 2nd downtime. Had my picc care this morning. I fancied a croissant as walked through the foodie part of hospital. Just got home and it tastes sooooo gooood!

Well, hair has gone. It’s been coming out for a few days, but this morning in the shower came out in handfuls. So, I’ve taken the plunge and asked my other half to shave it off.
Feels good to take back some control. Head feels a bit chilly, but I’m sporting a cute little beanie hat.

Hope everyone has had a good weekend.

Morning all, @cookie_monster1 im sorry to read this, but glad you’ve taken control, how do you feel about it all? I have lost a bit of hair but not enough to notice yet, I’ll be cold capping again on Friday for round 2………I can’t believe it has come around so quickly, I feel so much more mentally prepared now I know what to expect.

Sleep for me is still not brilliant, I haven’t slept through the night for 3 weeks now, I’ve tried everything and nap when I can……

How are you all doing?

Just about recovered now. Less than 5% hair left on my head. Taste almost back to normal. Coffee still tastes a bit off. Had a glass of merlot with sunday lunch. Didn’t quite taste right. Noticed that the the tops of my feet are very dry and flaky.
Laundry basket is now empty, without the aid of tumble drier. Yay!
Catching up with house and garden chores this week.
Meet up planned with a couple of ex work friends, and cousin popping by later in the week. Boiler service.
Oh and went to gynae at hospital on Saturday to remove mirena coil which gp couldn’t last November as the threads broke. Omg! I think I experienced childbirth for the 1st time at the age of 57. I must have left teeth marks on the gas and air thing. Thought I was going to break off the foot thing. Found matching scratches on my right leg. Got the hang of g&a eventually. When I was done I commented that it feels like a good Saturday night out. It’s a good job I’m not driving home. But I was high as a kite. They’ve probably heard it all before.
Life almost feels normal again. For a while anyway x

Lovely to hear how everyone is doing. I’m feeling really good right now. Yesterday was the first time I felt almost normal except for a cold. Still off coffee but everything else tastes good! I’ve been suffering from a very, very dry mouth and dry lips but it’s not all day every day.
I’m hoping this week will be a good and relatively normal week for me before next weeks treatment. Just waiting for my hair to fall out though. I went for a wig try on last Friday and it was better than I thought. Although I’m not sure if the wigs I’ve ordered to try on will arrive in time but I’ve hats ready if not!
It’s my birthday on Wednesday and I’ve not planned anything but if I’m feeling as good as I do right now I might try and do something.
We’ve now told most of our friends and family and everyone is being so supportive.
Lots of ‘sad cancer’ faces on the school pick up on Friday last week but I’m hoping as I’ve seen most people they’ll realise I’m actually ok and still me! People just don’t really know what to say do they?!

Morning all, @cookie_monster1 , I agree it’s getting that control back, wherever we can, that does help. I’m cold capping but between weeks 3/4 I had a lot of shedding, I’m talking sinks full morning and night. I read thats normal even with cold capping and it should slow down. It seems to have but still shedding lightly. I’m at the stage that there is still enough not to shave it yet but I’ll just need to wait and see how it continues. I’ve also bought a wig and nice soft hats so trying to be prepared as I can be.
I had my 3rd EC session on Friday and had some bad sickness that night but now feeling okay. I’m starting a new drug on 22nd Jan which Im a bit anxious about because Ive been okay with the EC and not sure how I’ll respond to this new one. Just need to wait and see.
Hope the rest of you are doing well xx

@clay83 hope all goes well with your new treatment. I agree the uncertainty of not knowing how you will react is difficult.

@mrsbee2 I’m feeling ok about my hair. I have hats and think I’ll look into getting a wig. Only thing is, I look like a cancer patient now!

Pleased everyone is doing well. I’ve been for bloods today and mentally preparing myself for my next TCHP on Thursday.

Hope everyone’s having a good day.

I did notice that my scalp started to feel sore at the same time as I started shedding. When it had mostly come out and stabilised my scalp wasn’t sore anymore and hasn’t been since.
@clay83 what is your 2nd chemo? I have 1 more EC then 3 docetaxil.
X

Had my 2nd chemo session yesterday. Was easier this time as I knew what to expect.
Oncologist has given me aprepitant (Emend) to help with nausea and vomiting, so hopeful that will work. All good so far.

Hope everyone else is doing ok.

Painting nails dark was just a tip I had read about before starting chemo so gave it a try and apart from little toe nails it worked well for me. I know others on here have used a nail treatment and had good results with that but I’m not sure if the name of the products they have used, hopefully someone will pop on and share with you  check with your team about your nails :+1: always check everything through your team and advise in any green tea, tuneric or anything else you might be taking :+1: :two_hearts::two_hearts::sparkles::sparkles:Shi xx

Hi all, gosh I hate the steroids! I can’t concentrate on anything!!! So wired!!!

I got black nail polish in a bag the hospital me, I’d rad somewhere that it stops the UV light damaging them? I only do my do my fingers though!

Hi @pinklizzie1 i was on Paclitaxel and was recommended that I treat my nails on a daily basis. I joined www.lookgoodfeelbetter.co.uk hand and nail course and the lady explained the need for strengthening treatment, filing, buffing, two layers of dark polish and top coat. To remove every 3 days to check nails. Twice daily use balm and hand cream.

This is for Docetaxel or other Taxane/taxol chemotherapy. My 12 weekly treatment has affected my nails, the cuticle became inflamed (LGFG recommends Vicks Vaporub as it can seal the skin and treat the infection) Good to use if nail falls off aswell.

I didn’t paint nails until about week 4/5 as I have had trouble with allergies to treatments and polish, so I had to try each product separately to ensure no reaction. As my nails are growing I have some damaged nails coming through by the cuticle, very indented and uneven.

I would recommend the LGFB course. Also they advised that after treatment it good to continue to keep using nail polish to protect from UV rays.

This could be helpful to read https://www.cancerpal.co.uk/post/looking-after-nails-during-chemotherapy-treatment

There are many other medical papers about nail toxicity if you want to Google it.

Hope it helps :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Hi All,

Hope everyone’s had a good weekend.

My weekend has been mixed. Unfortunately, aprepitant has not been the answer to my delayed nausea which hit today. Feeling a bit sorry for myself as also happens to be my birthday today too.
We will just have to celebrate when I’m feeling better.

How is everyone else doing?

I’m sorry you’ve not had such a happy birthday. Definitely delay celebrating to when you’re feeling better.
I’m in my week 3 of 3 week cycles, so physically feeling normal, but starting to dread Friday when I have my 3rd EC, and the following 10 days. At least I will be half way through. Salty crackers and other goodies at the ready x

Thank you naughty_boob. I’ll have a look.
