Hey hope you’re all having a lovely weekend! I’m day 6 post 1st docetaxel… So far so good but apart from the bright green mouthwash they prescribe is their anything at all that helps with the mouth soreness? My mouth and throat feels like sandpaper!!
Also the aching!!! I feel like every bone in my body is aching and my ribs feels like they’ve been bruised
Any tips please that have helped!? Only 2 more to go and on the plus side… No nausea!!! Would love some words of wisdom from anybody through the other side too
Hi @katie91 I suffered terribly with mouth soreness and in particular ulcerated gums so much so they cancelled my last chemo as the risk of sepsis outweighed the risk of not having number 6. I found the green mouth wash gentler on gums than normal mouthwash. I was also prescribed some Gelclair mouth rinse which puts a film over your gums and mucous membranes. Eating cold things helped a bit too but I was going through chemo last hot summer! Ask your chemo team they should be able to prescribe some Gelclair for you. It’s miserable isn’t it but only another couple to go. Hang in there x
Thank you! I’ll ask about gelclair, it’s bloody miserable isn’t it all these daft “little” side effects!! Hopefully that will help abit. Did your mouth go back to normal-ish in between cycles? I’m every 3 weeks and hoping to get at least a week or so of a normal mouth in between
I had 3 rounds of docetaxel end of last year, it wasn’t fun. I remember the sandpaper mouth feeling. I made a mouthwash with water, salt and bicarbonate of soda and rinsed after every meal. It was something I read on here, it can help prevent ulcers etc. It won’t stop the sandpaper feeling but I didn’t get any real problems other than that. And it does improve between rounds. I’m sorry you’re going through this, it is crap. You’re doing brilliantly though, count them down as they go. X
Hiya. Yes I had mucositis and a bit of thrush in the mouth. I couldn’t cope with the salt/bicarb rinse, but believe it does work well. I just gagged.
I got prescribed Nystatin which I took religiously. I also did not go on to a soft toothbrush, I carried on using my electric brush and my dentist said it was fine and not to worry about bleeding gums (check with your oncologist though).
To ease soreness, I used Bonjela which was an awesome flavour ride in the mouth and certainly worked for me. Also, Iglu mouth pastilles helped ease sores.
Also, any flowers I was sent were given to my neighbour. Fresh flowers set me off like mad.
As for bone ache, oh God yeah! Have a chat with the chemo team because they can prescribe you with pain relief. Also, taking antihistamines helps.
Hey it was worse towards the end of the treatment between 5 and what should have been round 6. I ended up in acute oncology with high temperature and infected gums and had to have IV antibiotics and a weeks course to clear it up which took about 2 weeks to heal. The oncologist considered it too much of a risk to give number 6 so chemo was finished. The two bottom teeth near to the gum now require root canal fillings so it may have been triggered by that. I’m 6 months post chemo now with ongoing herceptin so that in itself delays gum healing so I was probably doomed to begin with
I had the bone aches, like you esp. around ribs, so painful I thought I was having a heart attack. Went to A and E , all was fine, but they gave me codeine for pain which really helped . Gp could also prescribe I think. Only needed it for first week-10 days.
