Hi all, went for my follow up appointment this morning after getting the all clear on the biopsy, I expected a discussion on if the lump would be removed or left alone but was quite shocked to be told I had to have another biopsy? The Doctor said not to worry it was just a precaution and although it dosn’t happen often it does happen but of course I am worried all over again now. They also told me that I will get an appointment through the post for another scan. I have to wait upto 7 days for the results again and I am going to Spain on holiday in 6 days so I so hope that the result comes through before I go. Has anyone else had this experience of having to have another biopsy although they got the all clear?
hi fulltime i have just had my second core even although my first one was benign i get results on fri i to thought that would be it but doc says he wants to be 100% sure so i am happy to go along with that he also says if it comes back clear again he will recomend surgert anyway because it looks so suspicious i am glad i would rather be safe than sorry take care bablicious
Yes I guess you are right at least they are being cautious it just seems to be going on and on and I just want it to be over one way or another, no one mentioned removing my lump as of yet. Good luck with the test and the surgery. Take care.
Hi, can I join in as I’m going through the same worry? I was called back for a biopsy after my first routine mammogram (I’m 51 and couldn’t feel any lumps) where the doctor said he was very suspicious (I’ve since learnt this means he thinks the lump looks cancerous). After the follow up appt was cancelled because the results weren’t in I had a phone call the next day. I was told the results showed benign changes but the doctor wanted to repeat the biopsy. I went back the next day (last Thursday) when the doctor said he was worried and might have just missed the lump. He had four more goes at the biopsy (not pleasant but didn’t hurt) and I’m due to go back for the results on Tuesday. I’m very worried but don’t know which way its going- I guess I just have to wait. Either way he’s going to recommend removal of the lump and it can be checked again. Meanwhile I’m trying to carry on as normal at home and at work.
Hi Ladies
I have just got back from hospital after having a mammogram and scan that were both clear.
I found a hard area in my right breast, as I had BC in my left breast not long ago, they thought it best to check it.
I have come home having had a biopsy, but why have a biopsy if the scan and mammo were clear!!!
I hope it is just to put my mind at rest, but have now got to wait 2 weeks for scan results.
I’m trying to think of this as a good thing because last time I only had to wait 2 days.
I hope for each of you that your biopsies come back with a definite all clear. I am quite relieved to read of doctors/oncs being this cautious. When I had my last primary bc diagnosis (this was after 3 previous primaries/recurrences) the first biopsy came back inconclusive. My surgeon wanted another one done but was about to go on holiday so I was introduced to his standin. That biopsy came back benign (by this time the lump was growing apace). The stand in told me the ‘good news’ and said they would see me in clinic in 6 mths. After all I had been through over previous 9 years I got stroppy and insisted I wanted the ‘benign’ lump removed… I could go on but in the end he got the message and an appt was made for the return of my surgeon who was horrified that I could have been left for 6 months. The new tumour was 7cm when they removed it and had spread throughout axilla lymph nodes. We should not have to stand up and fight our corner - so good on your oncs etc. I am sorry if this comes across scary but I want to say if you have doubts dont let it rest till you get the answers you want. I am still around after 18 years.
I’ve just got back from the hospital. My results were benign but they said they still weren’t calling it a definite diagnosis because the doctor wasn’t convinced that the results matched what he could see. I’ve agreed to having the lump removed in an excision biopsy under general anaesthetic. They will test the lump (only 12mm at present) and let me know test results afterwards. I feel about 70% reassured but agree I’m glad they’re being cautious and thorough- it would be easy to say just leave it after two negative results. Thanks for sharing your story, Dawn, and thanks for your concern, Angie. I’m glad I’ve found this site but I’m trying not to read too many details about treatments until I know if I need them. My operation date is Oct 14th so I’ve now got quite a wait but I’m sure there are more urgent cases they need to do first.
ScottishFlower, I had a similar thing happen to me, my lump came back suspicious, but probably benign, so they removed it just to be on the safe side. I did have a few wobbles before surgery, but it was removed and was totally BENIGN!! What a relief that was! I hope that you have the same outcome.
My lump was benign as well. Unfortunately when the surgeon removed it there was a stage 3 tumour hidden underneath, it was right under the centre of the fibroid and couldn’t be detected by the tests, but it was growing rapidly. I knew there was something wrong when the surgeon saw me for the follow up appointment after the fibroid was removed as he was quite edgy and was fiddling with his glasses a lot of the time; he also had a breast care nurse with him.
I’m 2 years down the line next month, finished my treatment back in May and am about to finish counselling. I feel really well and ready to move on now.
Thank you both for your comments. I know there’s a good chance this will still be benign but I’m also beginning to realise that it might not be the end of the world if it is a tumour. There are a lot of you who have coped with all the treatment and can carry on with life afterwards. Thanks again for the encouragement.
I was told my lump was definitely benign and it turned out to be cancerous so I think it’s better to prepare for the worst as I was lulled into a false sense of security and went up for my results not suspecting anything at all.
I’m really pleased, Angie. Did they say what checks they will do in 6 months? Is it another mammogram or just a physical check? Enjoy your celebratory wine!
