I hate my new hair!!

Well I hate my new hair. It stands on end and is 2 inches long and I look like me old granny. It looked quite trendy when it was like a rabbits but now I caught sight of myself in a shop window and I looked behind me to see who was behind me and it was me. I don’t look like that when I look in the mirror. Mind you my teeth always look white at nightime in the bathroom mirror. It has rocked my confidence I can tell you. I scuttle about now trying not to get any eye contact. lol I really look old with this thin sticky up curly hair. Can’t wait for it to grow. I didn’t feel like this when I was bald!! I have vowed that I will not go to pub until I look decent. I have managed a week now ha ha love to all Eileen

Hi Eileen,
Totally understand!! You are not alone, mine started off a nice brownish colour, but gradually the grey has crept in and it seems to be growing upwards, with no sense of direction, and yes the chemo curl has also put in an appearance.
I am not at the 2 inch long stage, but I know what you mean about it knocking your confidence, It is a very different look than we had before but I keep telling myself soon I will be back to my own self, and moaning about bad hair days!! (I remember it well), never happy are we us women?
Keep your pecker up Eileen, I bet you look lovely and nothing would keep me out of the pub, so a week is long enough!!! Ha Ha. Take Care Eileen.

Hi Eileen

My chemo curl has kicked in but have a sticky up bit on both of my crowns (I have a double crown which is a pain in the a**e!). Maybe have yours trimmed a little? It might help you to find it more acceptable.

But as Jill says, it probably looks lovely, its easy to be critical of oneself.

How about a nice little hat?

Either way I hope you cheer up, and go to the pub! Sounds like you could do with a night out and sod everyone else, you’ve had a horrible time and you deserve a nice night out

Take care

Cecelia. x

yes yes yes! I hate mine too, i know i should be pleased to have it back but its come back all curly & my parting has dissapeared & i dont know what to do with it, it’s not my hair!! I know in the great scheme of things its quite trivial but its really bothering me & I’m glad I’m not the only one!

Oh god. I was moaning to my husband about my new black Beckham cut. Not even a number one - less than that by a mile. But I was always blonde as a young girl and fair all my life! I know Mand - just be grateful to have hair. Have you seen those posts from Pineapple who has none at all two years later? Now that is cruel.

YES, LADIES please be grateful to have some - i will swap with you any day. (thanks Dilys) lol

I hated mine sooo much. It looked as though I’d put my fingers into an electricity socket! Yesterday I had my second hair cut, and my hair now looks much as it did before it all… I have lost all the chemo curl and have a really straight graduated bob. My hairdresser recommends you get it trimmed as soon as you can to encourage new growth and cut out the frizz. I’m sure it will look a mess as soon as I wash it, but it looks pretty d**n amazing to me, today. It has taken two and a half years to get to this stage.

Jenny.

Hi all of you

Understand completely what you’re all saying. My hair is now about one centimetre and a horrible gun metal colour but I’m not going to go out without my wig until it’s much longer and dyed. I’ve seen on other postings that some people have successfully dyed their hair 3 months after chemo and one hairdresser has told me that it doesn’t have to be too long to be suitable for extensions, so going to look into that too.

Must say my wig is very good. It cost nearly £200 but I only had to pay £55 towards it with my NHS prescription. What I like most is that when I go out I don’t get any second looks. In fact, I’ve even had a hairdresser ask where I got my hair cut!

Good luck all of you. Mx

It has been a couple of years since I lost my hair & it grew back curly and horrible. I had it dyed and used straighteners on it, but eventually it got back to normal. It probably took over a year for it not to grow in curly and not be a dodgy colour!!! I dread the day they tell me I need chemo which will make me lose my hair again, it has got to be the worst part. I never liked wearing a wig it was itchy, hot & uncomfortable, I wore a hat more than a wig.

Thanks for these posts. It has helped me reading them. My hair is coming back and looks like an old lady style. It looked better when it when almost bald. Now frizzy and wavy with grey bits. I used to have lovely shiny dark hair. I was in tears before I went out for a meal the other night (in itself rare) and ended up wetting it completely to dampen it down. it’s not long enough for a cut yet so will have to live with it for another few weeks. I am more self-conscious now because it looks as if I have the world’s worst haircut. My weight from the steroids is going down but very, very slowly. I’m in remission and truly grateful but just wonder at times what has happened to my body.

Hi there,

I took the plunge yesterday to have my 1.5 inches coloured from white to a nice brown reddish colour, only to end up with washed out light orange colour. To be fair to the hairdresser he tried a much darker brown colour but this turned the hair a pale orange brownie colour. I hate my hair now but take heart that in perhaps a year it will be semi normal. Sorry to rant, but I feel really ***!!!@@@ off with it all today.

Bye for now, Pauline

Hi Pauline

Sorry your hair didn’t turn out as you hoped. If you look back at past posts, others’ experience of hair colouring seems to have been more successful so, maybe. it was the type of dye? I’ve got an inch to go before mine will be as long as yours and I was hoping that as soon as it was about that length, I’d be able to dye it a good colour so at least the colour if not the style looked OK. I’m sure our hair will look OK in a few months, but it’s hard not to be impatient.

Oh, girlies, I’m glad I’m not the only one who’s unhappy with her hair!! And yes, Pineapple, we do all sympathise with you :frowning:

This is the second time my hair’s come back grey and sticking up. Last time, I’d only had it cut once when the onc put me back on chemo and out it came. I was telling my cousin the other day that as long as I’m alive, our grandmother isn’t dead, because I’m the image of her with this hair! And I’ve got cradle cap and it’s flaky and horrible and I can’t get rid of it. I’m back at Christie’s in a couple of weeks so I’ll make an appointment with the hairdresser there and be pampered a bit.

Good luck to us all.

Dilys, thank you for being so kind. I have looked at the wig and its lovely - i think it might suit me actually. I have pm’d you.
Eileen, although i would be happy with any sort of hair if i had certain hair i am sure i would be complaining too.
I dont know what you hair looks like but am sure the curlyness will go soon - doesnt everyone say the chemo curl doesnt last that long?
I am not a hairdresser but have a freind with very think hair and she was always advised to keep it short and VERY layered.
As i live in France i dont know whats on your shops shelves but have you tried all the lotions and potions? the mousses can be good and there are all the thickening things you can use.
I am sure your hair will be back to normal fairly soon, Kylie also had it and look at hers now.

Pineapple, just seen these postings. I had no idea that your hair had not grown since chemo. Do you know why this is? Mine is fairly long now but so, so fine and brittle. I still wear a wig as I wouldn’t go out with hair like this. My wig is a short one and my own hair, being longish, blends in and makes me look as though I’ve got a shoulder length gratuated bob. So it’s not bad.

Have your eyebrows and eyelashes returned? My lashes returned but my brows never came back properly. All I have is a few stray hairs on each brow, the right one being thicker. It looks very odd! No underarm hair and pubic hair has grown at the sides but none in the centre! It looks like a lawnmower has taken a strip out of it.

love
Sue

Pineapple, as you’re looking at wigs, I just thought I’d let you know what mine is so you can look at in on the internet and see if it might suit you. If you go to www.wigsbymichaelrobert.co.uk and look under ceamore in wigs for women, mine is Erin. I tried loads on both at their salon in Southend and another in Lakeside, because you can’t tell until you put a wig on if it will suit you, but I did read on one site that Erin was the most popular wig and I do think it would suit a lot of people. Good luck with whatever you decide to do, I do think you’re lovely to be so sympathetic with all of us who are moaning about our hair when yours hasn’t come back. Is there no hope that it will in the future?

Mx

Dear Pineapple and all

Pineapple - I have pm’d you separately. And have remembered that site - www.wigbank.com Have a look and see

Hi Ladies,

Well I’m just so glad I’ve got my hair back! Today is my first day at work without my scarf and everyone has been very complimentary. I used to have a chin length bob, but I may keep it short now. It depends on whether it stays this thick or not.

Yes, I am grateful that I have hair, I think, and not like poor pineapple. I have still not got hardly any eyelashes either so constantly have streaming eyes. WHERE ARE THEY ? love to all Eileen

Hi Eileen lovely to find you again.I have short lashes but no eyebrows at all.My hair is very grey and curly when I look in the mirror it is as if my mum were still here its quite spooky! My hair is about ready for a cut at last.I liked the Judi Dench look when it first came back but its more Edna Everage now All the best girls Valxx
