i start rads soon any good tips

Top tips is the title of this thread so for ladies having to endure the humiliation of going to Oxford then brace yourselves for no changing rooms, not even in the “measuring up suite”.

You are treated like cattle and have to use two tiny old dirty smelly toilets that are freezing cold and have no coat hooks on the door and nothing to put your clothes into.

It this is your expeirence please join the rest of those of us who are DISGUSTED by this treatment and write to PALS as BCC do not seem to be in the least bit interested; I have tried to get them to plead a case to be treated like human but “no dice” as they say.

Sorry all -

haven’t been zapped off of the face of the earth or anything - just been quite traumatized by the rads!! I am bloody freezing each time, though on Friday i wore LOTS of clothes and rolled down my top so that most of me was still covered, had a hot drink before I went and another after I finished and felt much better. I think the trauma is because no one really talks TO you with this treatment - it’s all ’ 90.8 to the left - 91? yes, perfect’ etc etc.

I had the jelly pad to for intensifying the rays - at least it felt warmer!!

radiographer said to me on Fri - 'you are SO sensible to have chosen appointments after 6pm - all the transport patients (ie those needing transport) are done in the day and the waiting is awful, not to mention parking being free after 6pm '(we pay but only £2.20 / week) So change all your appointments to late ones if it fits in with the family! It also leaves me free all day, and OH does the childcare in the eventing for that 1.5 hours I’m being nuked…

Hope you all well.

Lisa - I’m following you!! We are all missing you from the movers thread!!

I know what you mean about talking over you and all numbers and move your arm up more and hips this way abit more and the pen that they draw on you all the time is a pain in the ASS …wash it off then miss a day and they draw on you some more …

well got 5 more left cant wait …no more hour there and hour back…mind you I have been doing some christmas shoping in (cheltenham) spelling…

Hi ladies
Is everyone ok very quite on here ???
sal x

hi all
i now have just 8 rads left, 5 and 3 boosters! cant believe its nearly over! my hospital have been just brilliant. they are a fantastic team, talk to me lots and have become friends to now. they take their time with me, due to shoulder problems, and understand that i am in pain through it all. boobs doing ok now, since allergic reaction to the aquaeus cream! now using alloe vera gel, which was recommended. slightly red, but believe they will get worse!!! especially when rads has finished! they are still tender, but think this is probably due to still healing since op. cannot begin to tell you how tired i am tho. eyes hurt all the time and feel totally wiped out. also have a bad cold, which makes it fun having to lie still on the bed when nose is running!! having to do last minute preps before getting on the bed!!! good job it lasts just a few minutes!!! travelling to hospital is getting me down, as most appts early and this makes it take about an hour instead of 25 mins, and costly with petrol. still, cant complain!!!
anyway, hope you are all doing well and counting down the days.
tade care
deb xx

Hey ladies,
sorry not been about was in Liverpool and just decorating the house.

Debs-sorry you are feeling poorly, almost there though babes.

Td - I am grand just busy busy busy, and I know exactly what you mean about the impersonal experience of rads, big difference from chemo. The hospital I have my rads in is different from chemo. They see 300 patients daily for rads there, some amount of ppl with cancer.

I only have 3 more to go, since I was away Mon & tues I have to have them next week so I finish on Tuesday and can’t wait. My hair is growing well and not as patchy as it has been, hopefully by the New Year it will be good enough to go back to work. OH got laid off so I feel I have no choice but to get back to it, although I really want to anyway.

Oh well take care ladies and I’ll be about soon.
Love and hugs

Hi Ladies, anyone starting radiotherapy in Jan that would like to pal up with me?

Hi Leadie,

I’m due to start radio about the 2nd week of Feb if that’s any good.

Mallysally - If you’re still on here after finishing…have you any advice for parking at Cheltenham (which is where I’ll be going)? i’ve heard it’s a nightmare and I’ll be driving myself. Do you know if the Park and Ride from the racecourse is any good? How far from the centre of Cheltenham is th hosp? Is it walking distance (ie within 1 mile?)

Apologies for all teh questions - just trying to get my logistics sorted out!

Thanks, Bella x

Thanks Bella L, That will be good, are you having other treatment at the moment?

Yes I’m on chemo, I had my 5th FEC 2 days ago, the 6th and final (yee ha) is due 20th Jan. My Onc has sent off for my radio planning appt and has said I should start the 2nd week of Feb, which will be great as I can’t wait to finish chemo!

I’m also due to start Tamoxifen at the same time. Had mx at the end of Aug 08 (that was last year now!!!) so am very much looking forward to moving on and getting through this now, with the aim of going back to work (slowly) by the end of March and generally getting my life back!

When are you due to start? Have you had your planning session yet?

Bella x

Hi Bella, Am awaiting an appointment to see the oncologist in about 2 weeks time. Have not had any chemo as only a small lump and no lymph involvement.

Hello Leadie.
I start my radio next Thurs - 8th.
15 sessions.
Worst part was measuing up session - was very cold and got upset - I think just because it as the start of another round of treatment.
Onc came in to see me and calm me down.
Having mine at Rosemere in Preston, Lancashire.

Adejude, i am at Rosemere in Preston too. It is a brilliant place and im sure you will be fine. I was in tears after measuring up and first session, but after that i got used to it and now have completed my standard rads and just have 5 boosters to go. It isnt like a hospital department. Is more like the reception of a nice hotel with the smell of coffee and the day’s papers available! Good luck! Im there for first booster just before dinner tomorrow and my 13 yr old daughter is coming with me.
