July 2023 Chemo Starters

Steroids are mostly keeping me awake! Slept all of 3 hours last night.

Also flushed face, bit of bloating and generally feeling a bit wired. Nothing too awful. When they wear off will be worse I’m sure…

Not too bad thank you @Emevers. The tiredness seems to catch up with you doesnt it. Hopefully that is all you get with the docetaxel :crossed_fingers::crossed_fingers::crossed_fingers:.

Ive got aches and a sore mouth now and have spent the day doing nothing. I was so tired i fell asleep with a hat on on the sofa yesterday, had a temp spike and had to go to hosp. My temp came down again and i didnt have to stay in overnight - they took blood and checked for infection but thankfully ok. It was very reassuring that they were so thorough but i wont be falling asleep in a hat again! At least i think thats what it was, either way they said i was fine to go.

Is anyone else getting night sweats on Docetaxol?

Glad you were checked and ok  I know docetaxol kept us Oct17 lot awake most of the night because of steroids and we ended up talking about food (which was usual for us) and one of the girls uploaded the Kentucky fried chicken song at about 1am :joy::joy::two_hearts::two_hearts::sparkles::sparkles:Shi xx

Hi all,
I hope you are all doing okay, it seems a lot of us on now on Docetaxel (along with a range of other things) It does seem that the Docetaxel is the one we are all worried about. @Emevers thank you for the updates, I hope you are feeling better now. I am already getting morning, daytime and night sweat, doesn’t seem to be anything I can do for them other than having a fan on me at all times. I hope you are not suffering with them too much. @Vanelliope, your hair looks great! I have been cold capping and still have lots of hair at the front, sides and bottom of the back but have lost a lot on the crown and upper back. It’s been too hot to cover it up so I have just been going with it. I still have some eye brows and lashes but have read the Docetaxel might finish those off. @Hawketower, welcome to the forum, I am really finding it helps to hear from others on this journey, it’s not a great journey but if we can support each other with our experiences that makes it all a bit easier.
I was prescribed Benzydamine hydrochloride mouthwash when I had a sore mouth with EC, it really helped. My nurse also suggested freezing pineapple in ice cubes to suck on with the Docetaxel, I have some in the freezer now, ready for my first Docetaxel and Carboplatin tomorrow. I was also prescribed Laxido for constipation, it worked wonders, only needed it for a couple of days, have been fine since.
Sorry for the extra long post, I’ve not been on here for a little while, too busy stressing about the Docetaxel but reading everyone’s posts has given me strength, we’ve got this far, the finish line is getting closer, after tomorrow that will be one more down.
Best wishes to you all and thank you all for sharing your experiences. Niki xx

Dont apologise for the long post @NikiR its good to hear all this. I’ve been avoiding the mouthwash, I’m not sure why - I’ve been using tee tree mouthwash and bicarbonate of soda but am going to start using it as my mouth is still sore.

I had Docetaxol last Tuesday and felt less achey yesterday (day 6) but still v tired. I still have slight leg pain prob from the filgrastim but last night was my last one so am looking forward to a less achey sleep tonight! Sleep is pretty rubbish at the moment but im trying not to worry about it.
I’ve been watching Alone in Canada to try to transport myself to somewhere wild instead of being stuck on the sofa…
Getting out for small walks with the dog help - I can only really make it once round our local park at the moment. I think also doing little things to cheer yourself up, talking to friends and eating nice things also help - its a massive relief not feeling sick.
Hang on in there, we’re getting through it. And thanks for sharing, it really helps hearing from other people x

Hi NikiR, I hope your first Docetaxel and Carboplatin goes well. Speaking of hair, I knew I’d a bald patch above my left ear (thankfully there’s still enough hair to do a combover type thing) but I hadn’t checked out the back so I did that with a mirror yesterday. It’s a lot barer around the crown, and overall I’d say I’ve lost half the volume. But at least the cold cap has saved that much. Isn’t it a rotten feeling though. This morning I looked in the mirror and thought oh sh1t my eyelashes have gone. Luckily with mascara there’s still something there, but I guess Docetaxel is gonna have them too. I’ve got Laxido too, my little orange friend.
Best get back to work, hope everyone’s ok.

Hey all, hope you are doing OK?

Update on the doc and phesgo from here - lots of fatigue and muscle aches day 4-5. Now day 6 and I’m hopeful they might be starting to ease?

Not much else to report apart from grim mouth feeling - drinking lots of water is becoming a chore and I’m considering milkshakes and smoothies…

Also had a lovely trip to A&E last night as my temp spiked - although now I think it might be my ear thermometer as I had no fever once I was in the hospital! Does everyone else take their temp twice a day, and what thermometer do you use? Managed to escape at 4am, but not without a load of strong antibiotics first (which in the end I don’t think I needed as neutrophils are way high)

 I used a boots digital thermometer and that always worked well :+1: I used to probably check my temperature 6-8 times a day and during night when I woke up and made a note on my graph chart so I’d got record to take into hospital if the rapid response team wanted me in, I’d got a graph chart which they could see temperature and time on, but that was just me, it helped me manage my way through a bit, I’d put on time I’d taken which med, done the wbc booster jab the lot so I wasn’t going oh did I take that did I do that, I’d got it all down on my graph chart. :two_hearts::two_hearts::sparkles::sparkles:Shi xx

What has everyone been told about temp? Mine was up to 35.7 tonight but then went back down and is now 36.9 so fine but I did panic a bit. The leaflet says anything over 38 but I’m sure they told me anything over 37.5 at the beginning.
@Shi Ive started a spreadsheet to get to know my temperature a bit better, good idea.
This is like a full time job isn’t it?

I hate milk, but last round I felt I’d vom if I had to take a sip more water, so I started on flavoured milk and smoothies. They helped!
I’ve a Braun digital thermometer. Very hard not to take it more than once a day, and count the increments! Hope you’re feeling ok now x

 it helped me during chemo doing it so I could keep track of temp, meds etc, it was just my way of doing it, everyone finds what works for them  it’s like post op exercises I put sticky dots up door frame so I could see each day bit by bit my reach improved as I could see by the dots  whatever works for you is what you should do  no right or wrongs just do what you need to do for you  :two_hearts::two_hearts::sparkles::sparkles:Shi xx

The info I got for temp was over 37.5 or under 35.5. Advice given was to take temp twice a day, but I do it more than that, can’t hurt :woman_shrugging:t2:
I can’t remember who mentioned pineapple but at my last chemo the nurse there also mentioned pineapple when I said I’d been trying honey for a sore mouth, I think it may stimulate saliva but not entirely sure.
I am so sick of drinking water, and end up feeling very bloated. I drink a small amount of milk which actually seems to help with acid indigestion which is a new thing I now also get , some tropical fruit juice which is less acidic than orange juice, and I’ve tried using o.r.s hydration tablets which are like dioralyte but tastes ok. I use those diluted like a drink for when you’re exercising once a day, I feel like they help. I’m currently drinking a decaf caramel latte from Starbucks:grimacing:, most of the time tea and coffee taste to awful to drink but there is a small period of time when this coffee, and only this coffee, tastes ok!
My son came home with a cold yesterday, it was bound to happen at some point…… I’m just hoping that somehow I will be really lucky and not catch it :laughing:. I’m wearing a mask as he can’t due to disability, and I’m washing my hands like crazy, then moisturising like crazy as they were really dry already
BTW, I’ve had 4 chemo containing docetaxel and I still have some hair!

@emsj fingers crossed the cold doesn’t get you!

I’ve had a follow up call from the hospital today and they have said not to take my temp at all unless I have other symptoms - apparently a temp on its own is not necessarily a sign of infection, and being a slave to the thermometer is unnecessary stress. Really happy to hear this!

Hoping to turn a corner on the doc side effects soon - feel like I’m filling up my bingo sheet as today’s symptoms are tax trots (thank you Imodium, my saviour!) and indigestion (thank you Lansoprazole, please keep working overnight).

Really hoping for a good night’s sleep tonight for the first time in a week…

Hi, how is everyone doing?

I’ve got my first docetaxel and Phesgo in the morning. Eurgh. Doctor said in clinic on Tuesday I’d be having 4 cycles. NO!!! I said, I WAS TOLD 3, I’M NOT DOING 4, I CAN’T DO 4!!! She was rather taken aback by my reaction . Fingers crossed it’s not 4.
Anyhow, best get to bed, hope everyone is well xx

@Hawketower, wishing you luck with your first Docetaxel and fingers crossed it’s only 3!

I’m now day 6 after my first Docetaxel and Carboplatin, very wiped out day 4&5, slept for most of day but feel like I’m coming out the other side now. Felt mostly tired and achy but also more nausea this time. My mouth doesn’t taste very nice and struggling with the taste of water. I did have a little trip to A&E with a high heart rate, no infection but the possibility of blood clots so I’m now on blood thinners and have a CT scan booked for Wednesday.

I hope everyone else is doing okay, sending lots of love to you all. x

@Hawketower hope all went well today
@NikiR hope all goes well on Wednesday. I’ve had a high heart rate but onco dr acted like it was normal with the treatment I’m having!
Don’t want to jinx things but the side effects have for the most part gotten less over 4 treatments, the disgusting tasting water and nausea have lessened, so I hope that will be the same for everyone else.
I’m on my good week, so eating while I can, my taste for foods has changed though! Don’t know about everyone else??
Hope everyone is well
Xxx
