Just diagnosed and wanting to talk to people who understand

I have gone on strike from collecting dirty cups and plates from sons bedroom,we seem to running short of crockery…

Hi spongbob and Jill. I know what you mean about house. My house is in a terrible state at the moment. My friend has come round a couple of times and cleaned for me bless her but with my husband and son it’s not long before it’s like a poo hole again and my son seems to have a collection of glasses and crockery in his room! I think our sons are the same age Jill? Xxx

He is 17.Need to train him up ,no-one to pick up after him at Uni,I remember the state of the lads flats when I was at Uni,couldn’t walk across the floor due to debris and dirty plates .

Did you enjoy our weekend of celebrations Sarah?

Hi Jill my son has just turned 18 in June so similar in age. Yes Saturday was lovely so many friends and family turned up it was great and very overwhelming. And yesterday our wedding anniversary we went for a lovely meal on a boat and then sat by the waterfront and had a few drinks. Today is my husbands birthday and we are going out for dinner tonight with his friends and family. We are very lucky with having amazing people around us. Xxxxxx

Sounds lovely.

Happy anniversary Sarah…sounds like you have celebrated in style! X

Sometimes it won’t send if there is a smiley in the message.

Thank you ladies  Oh no ann that must have been a pain. I’m so grateful that you tried to reply. Do you think they would be able to recover it? Xxxxxxx

Hi Sarah,

Have tied again and lost the lot!! Ahhhhgg, this new format is driving me nuts!!

I’ll reply to it here.

First thing is that chemo is a daunting prospect for anyone, and when I went for my first session, I was a quivering wreck. However, it wasn’t anything like as bad as I thought and my side effects were minimal, so I think I did a couple of things that helped.

I drank loads of water for a couple of days before chemo, about half a litre while having chemo and loads more for the following few days. Some ladies take ice lollies with them, so if your not a great water drinker, perhaps that would be a better option for you. As your chemo team will have probably told you, your white cells will take a bit of a kicking leaving you more susceptible to infection. Invest in a decent thermometer so that you pick up on fever quickly and switch your toothbrush to a soft bristle to minimise scratches to your gums which may allow infection in that way. Request that family/ friends who have colds etc keep their distance and try to keep away from large crowds 10  to 14 days post chemo to keep infection risk down. I had mouth ulcers and used adult Bonjella which zapped them quite quickly. I also suffered from constipation (sorry, not a lovely subject!!) and took Dulclax on the evening of treatment and for the following  2 nights before bed. Some ladies go the other way and have to stock up on Imodium, so you may have to wait to see how it will affect you.

Exercise was a godsend for me. I walked for miles, and although it was a thought to start with, I found the longer I walked, the better I felt and with that in mind, entered the moonwalk in Edinburgh. My oncologist was a bit concerned that I would push myself too much, and insisted that if I felt tired out at any point, I would give up. But I’m a bit of a thrawn old bag and did manage to get round the whole 26 miles!! I also did jazzercise classes on weeks 2 & 3. Recent research points to exercising during chemo being of benefit, so perhaps you can use that as motivation? I didn’t have to walk far to feel better, so please don’t think you have to walk miles and miles!!

I managed to work right through chemo, but I must stress that I only work part time and couldn’t have worked full time throughout. I sorted out a rota system with my bosses which allowed me maximum time off immediately after treatment, and I also got them to agree that if I was tired, I would do what I could then go home. This worked really well for me because it kept things relatively normal during what was an extraordinary time and kept the stress off, due to the fact I knew I could pack in and go home at any point.

Please feel free to ask any questions while your going through your treatment. I can’t sugar coat it and say it’s easy, but it really wasn’t as bad as I thought, and I hope that your experience is better than mine. You’ll also come out the other side much stronger than you are now. I certainly have. Sorry for waffling for so long and hope I’ve been of some help.

All the best and take care. Ann x x x

Sounds like a plan Lorna!!!

Lovely inciteful post Ann…you sound like a trooper! I haven’t needed chemo and am dragging my feet! Lol but plan to treat myself to a trainer after last rad and get back some fitness. X

Stop showing off!!
