May 2017 chemo starters

A gorgeous sunny day here. Hubby has given step son bbq lessons. Lots of healthy salad and fruit too ?

Hi ladies sorry to crash in on your conversation with a random post, I’m just looking for abit of advice from any mums out there. Do we keep our little ones away from nursery/schools if we know illness are going around. Like chicken pox for example? X

Treehouse, hope the garden is still in tact after BBQ lesson and you all enjoyed the yummy food.

AnnieA, I don’t have children so can’t really comment however, I have had this convo with a friend because we were discussing how it’s impossible to avoid colds and sniffles especially if you have children because of school. I think if you kept them off every time a bug was going around the school would have a problem with missed time however, chickenpox that’s a bigger problem. You could ask if the child could have lessons in a private room etc but again this may make the poor kid feel they have done something wrong?? It’s a tricky one.

My personal opinion would be keep them home but not sure that is fair??? Soz not much help and I feel sorry for all of you who have the extra responsibility of caring for children through all of this. I struggle managing just myself. Well done all of you xxx

Hi Annie. I have had similar problem with chicken pox at my sons school. They should not be at school of they have spots but not scabbed over. However they can be contagious before spots appear which makes it difficult to avoid. My youngest is 11 so does not tend to get as close as smaller kids do. He so far has not caught anything.
It’s a difficult one. I suggest you chat to nursery and explain why you are concerned. See what they suggest.

Hi annie, it is a tricky one. Have you and your children had chicken pox? If you have all had it I’d probably send them in. If not I’d keep them off? Can you speak to your oncologist and see what they suggest? My oncologist said you usually learn to tolerate your childs germs as you don’t normally catch everything they get but I’d be more wary with chicken pox etc xx

Hi AnnieA. I have a 4 year old in preschool. He caught chicken pox between surgery and chemo but I had it as a teenager so the doctor wasn’t too worried. I am still sending him to preschool as there are generally fewer bugs around at this time of year (helped by being outside a lot ), it keeps things normal for him and gives me a break. I have already warned the primary school that when the autumn bugs start flying around (late September) won’t be in. It also depends on how my white blood cell count is doing on Tuesday. It’s very much a personal call but that’s the way I’m playing it. Follow your gut feeling on this one. X

Thanx for all the replies regarding illness and nursery. It is a tough one I really don’t want him to miss out he’s only 3 and loves nursery. I also think that you carry the chicken pox virus with you before the spots appear don’t you so the children that actually do have them would have carried it for days beforehand so is there any point keeping him away afterwards?
I’m not in touch with my oncologist like most woman on here are I’ve actually only seen him once but I will make some phone calls in the morning and see what is best to do. Thanx again ladies x

Enjoy the time with your girls Trish, I’m sure that will be the best medicine you can have x

I’m off for blood test today for cycle 4 on Wednesday! First Pacitaxol and 1st of 9 weeklys! Eeekkk! !!!

Wolfee, good luck with treatment today.

Trish, glad you have your girls with you, visitors really help especially special ones. ?

So this is my week of awesome before treatment 4.
I am taking my mum out for today. Shopping and lunch. She does so much for me in my bad week and picks up the kids. Nice to be useful and spend time together when she is not having to look at me with that worried expression. ?

Good luck with bloods katie.
Weeklies’? They must be gentler if they can do them more often. That has to be a good thing ?
Hope you don’t have too far to go to get to the hospital. X

Here’s hoping weeklys are easier! Enjoy your day out with your mum.

Good luck today wolfee. Anyone else on treatment this week?

Made a little discovery this morning. I ran out of paraben free shower gel this morning and started using an Aldi kick start one (cheaper version of source) and was surprised to find it is paraben free! Woo hoo. Definitely going to check out rest of Aldi make up and toiletries to see if they have anymore ! X

Hi All, back home now. 3rd and last FEC done now. The picc line made a big difference it was so nice not having my hand messed around with.

Not so nice was a poor lady this morning while I was waiting 2 start had some kind of funny turn during her treatment all the nurses went running. I could see the panic and worry on her daughters face and the lady’s poor legs hanging off the chair, I could sense the panic in the room it was awful. I felt so sad and helpless I wanted 2 get up and try and comfort her daughter but got stuck in my seat. They ended up taking the last away I’m not sure maybe addmiting her on a ward? It was heartbreaking and something I’ll never forget.

Anyway apart from that mine went smooth after the delay starting. I do have a massive headache a killer I hadn’t got all my water in this morning could be that? But all good home now. X

Katie11, my friend has just told me that Tesco are now also stocking a new paraben free range it’s in some funky colourful packaging. I’ll do a late night brows if the isles one night this week.

Oh and I’ve just had the amazon email my package the theives oil has been delivered - exciting can’t wait 2 burn it. My sisters cold apparently at work today has fully come out so I’ll be able 2 try and stop it spreading about with this stuff.

Trisha69, has your daughter manages 2 get a nice work experience placement. I’ve just been sitting remembering mine gosh was a long time ago. I just did some admin at a car rental / workshop place but they were lovely. The best part was the walk gettting there. No bus but a long walk through short cut fields and I got really lost I was about 2 hours late it was before mobile phones the police got called and I was found covered in muck and with Hayfever sniffles from hell.
On a plus note my dad went and got me a new bike ? so I could cycle ?

Gosh wolfee that must have been scary to watch and poor lady and daughter ! Well done on completing your last FEC. Hope the oil works. At least your sister should hopefully be over her cold by the time you are on your low count week.

I’ll have a nosey at tesco stuff too. Looks like more shops are stocking paraben free which is a good thing x

How’s it going with your daughters Trish. X

Blood test done for wed. Actually getting nervous bout starting new drug. Feels like starting again x

WolfEE  - glad all went well for you today. Must have been scary seeing that lady run into problems

Katie - I had my bloods done today and oncology appt, all good to go for Thursday. Also feel like I’m starting all over again. I will be looking out for your comments nervously on Weds!

Hi all,
Sorry I haven’t been on the forum much after my second FEC. I’m on day 13 now and feeling good apart from the major fatigue.

AnnieA- not sure if you did get a response to your query from oncologist, but my 4year old is on immunosuppressants for a kidney condition so I’m a lot more vigilant than most when it comes to transmitted illness. Saying that, even with a suppressed immune response, I try to ensure he continues with all normal activities like going nursery and he’s hardly ill. Like you said, with chicken pox it’s infectious prior to the spots appearing. It depends if your son has had chicken pox before? Mine did when he was 2 (which has turned out to be a blessing), so I’m less worried about it now. The only time I kept him off nursery was when there was a case of Measles a year ago.

On another note, my baby had her 8week vaccinations last week and I was concerned about both me/son because the MMR is a live virus injection, however we were both fine.

Wande x

Nice to hear from you wande. It’s no wonder you have major fatigue, dealing with this and an 8 week old and a 4 year old. Don’t know how you do it. You definitely deserve a star of the day award xx

Yep wandestrong I agree here is another :star:

Trish, I find during my 3rd week I am about a lot making up for things I Havant been able 2 do previous weeks also friends wait until this week 2 visit so I end up having late nights also. Becuse I’m feeling a lot better generally I get fed up at home and as you end up in Tescos a lot. It does catch up on you it really did last week for me and this past weekend I was drained could hardly move and today first day after treatment yesterday I still ache. I believe it’s pushing and doing 2 much without realising.
Take your temperature make sure it’s not any kind of cold, flu creeping in but my guess is you just need rest rest rest you’ve perhaps over done it a little.
Xxx

Prior diagnosis I did have a B12 shot about a month or so b4 I even knew about this horrid mess it was picked out on a general blood test I was low. I have also been on calcium and iron tables for about 18 months or so but was told 2 stop then during
treatment.
Funny that blood test that they saw my b12 low was about six weeks prior diagnosis and not a single hint of cancer was detected not sure what they look for or if eveytbing was tested. I was feeling a bit out of sorts so had the blood test just 2 check things out. Apart from the b12 shot needed as a one off I was top marks on everything else!!
