October 2015 Chemotherapy starters - please join!

I had a portacath. It settled down after a week or so and gave no bother. It’s a blessing not to have to use your veins.

How long ago did you have it and had it been used yet?

Morning all. Day 10 and still feeling pretty tired with achy shoulders but can’t complain other than that. Oh, I do seem to have quite a lot of spots though.

I have an appointment with my oncologist on Tuesday which she set up for me when I saw her to sign-off on the chemo. I am assuming this is simply a meeting to check how I’ve been since the first dose, discuss any potential change in sickness medication and side effects etc. I think there are a few people on this thread who are further down the line than me so wondered if you had any advice to give on what this meeting is for if not for what I am assuming?

Hope everyone is feeling well enough to enjoy Sunday. xx

Thanks Sarah. Good to know. I’ll ask about omeprazole as per your recommendation to me recently.

Hope all good with you and you are enjoying the weekend. x

My port has been in for two weeks and they used it for my first session.  I am pleased to have it don’t get me wrong.  I just really don’t like it.

I’ve had a frenzied baking session this afternoon.  It’s good to accomplish something.  I’m pretty much back to normal now.  So for next time I will not expect anything of myself for this first week and then I won’t be disappointed.  Hope everyone is having a good day.  Xx

Hi all, headache has lifted during today, so hopefully that will be the last I see of it for a while. I think the only thing I appear to be suffering from is tiredness. I am getting out everyday though for a walk and fresh air.

no hair loss yet, now on day 11, however the lady garden does appear to be malting - sorry!.

We are off in our caravan for a week on Saturday, so that will be nice, but I’ve got to come back for my bloods on the Tuesday, then all being well chemo on the Thursday.  Hope I continue to feel ok.

enjoy your evening all.

Glad your headache is gone Jayne, and glad everyone is doing ok.

Jojo…so sorry you are blazing the bald trail. We’ll done for taking control and hopefully it will get easier as you (and your kids) get used to it. Mine has been falling out all over the place so every day I think, hmmm, maybe one more day before the big clip. But somehow, my hair still looks normal, and not even thin yet?! (Unless there is a big bald patch at the back that no one’s told me about). I think I must just have more hair than I thought. I wonder if the AC I’m having has a different timescale to the FEC that most people seem to have, though I will defo lose it so imagine only a couple more days.

On a different note, just been to see Suffragette…brilliant and very inspiring. Highly recommend it if you feel up to going!

This week it’s bloods and oncologist on Tues, second chemo on Weds. The fun never ends! Have a good week everyone. Ele x

P.s Jojo I saw a scarf tying tutorial on YouTube and the woman wore a little black cotton beanie underneath the scarf which stops it slipping but also gives the suggestion of hair/hairline so really improves the look of the whole ensemble. Just in case it helps! X

Hi JoJo,

I’ve ordered a few turbans with a scarf attached from EBay ready for the big drop :womanfrustrated:- the turbans themselves are lovely and soft and the beauty of it is that you can remove the scarf that it comes with and add your own.  I’ve tried them on and so far so good xx

It seems to be the same seller that has these, they are lovely:

Turban with scarf

That’s a good tip Em. Love that spotty one that your link goes to.

Gets out credit card.

Hi ladies, also have a look on Annabandana, they have a lovely selection and the mix and match section is really good.

jayne. X

Morning all.  Day 11 today.  No hair loss yet, but had a really bad night with back and shoulder ache.  I just couldn’t get comfortable.  Apart from that and tiredness I appear to be back to normal.

Jojo, what date did you have your chemo?  I will be sourcing head wear this week.  There is a hairdressers near us that are wig suppliers so I’ll be paying them a visit.

happy Monday everyone xx

Morning everyone.

Jojo, we like having you here as you are leading the way so please stay with us October folks.

Second the Annabandana recommendation and they are very swift on delivery. I’ve splashed out on a lovely turban from Surburban Turban but they are not cheap - kind of like the Boden catalogue of cancer headwear! It is very well made though and I guess I’ll get lots of wear out of it in the months when hair is growing back. I’m afraid any money saved at the hairdressers is being cancelled out by headwear purchases.

I’m still tired and achy but in general feeling okay.

Happy monday all. xx

Like you ElleJ my hair seems to be coming out in handfulls. It is starting to look thin now so will be making a wig appointment. As it is half term I hope my daughter will come along and help me choose otherwise I might go for something toally inappropriate.

Anyone else getting a strange taste in their mouth all the time. Didn’t notice it for the first cycle but this time it is starting to annoy me. Am on day 5. Is this what pineapple is supposed to help? Any suggestions? I’ve tried mouthwash, mints, etc. At the moment even drinking water tastes yucky.

Val, I do love a 1920s style hat and like you have seen some lovely ones in my local TK Max which is only ten minutes walk from the hospital. I’m day 11 so this is the week for the hair for me. Everything intact so far but only a matter of time now before something happens. It’s weird just waiting.

Hope you enjoy your garden today Val and the lovely weather. Dull here is South London I’m afraid. xx

Agree it’s very odd waiting for your hair to fall out.  I find myself giving a little tug every now and then to check. It seems crazy that in a few days it will just give up.

september girlies…don’t think of going anywhere.  We need you both too much!

EleJ This’ll make you laugh . . I actually DO have 2 bald-ish areas on the back of my head & had no idea until husband told me. He was in 2 minds, but eventually thought it looked a bit too weird, so said something. I did a combover & no-one can see.  Most importantly, I can’t see it when I look in the mirror, so it’s not bothering me too much. Deluded or what! Sorry to the ladies whose hair is coming out . . To be honest, you still lose quite a lot even with the cold cap xx

Hi all,
I’m having my first FEC on Monday and getting very nervous!
I’m 34 with 2 sons age 7 and 1
I was diagnosed on 18th sep with ER/pr/her2 positive which has spread to my lymph nodes
I’ll be having 4x FEC 4x T along with herceptin then surgery, radiotherapy and tamoxifen.
I’m also going to give the cold cap a try to see how I get on.
Xx

Bibi, that’s a bit like my husband who sat in the bathroom last week and angled the shaving mirror so he could see the back of his head in another mirror, and said to me, 'How long have I had that bald spot??!? to which my reply was, ‘About 10 years!’. Luckily he is about 6’4 so as long as he’s standing up no one else can see it.

My daily hair report…more of the same, tons falling out on pillow, in shower, when blow drying, but must be coming out evenly all over as still looks normal (apart from slightly receding ‘sideburns’ - as I write that I’m thinking you might all be wondering what I look like - full monkey-human covering of body hair, pixie dust pubes, sideburns (and now lack of)…I’m honestly not the freak I sound!!

Anyway, just making the most of each day before it goes, and Hoover working overtime. New brow pencil which my daughter recommended arrived today too, so prepared in case the brows thin too.

Big love to you all xxx

Hi Sahhs, sorry that post was responding to the earlier discussion! Welcome to the thread, you’re in the right place as everyone is lovely and we’re all here to support each other. xxx

LOL. Mine’s never stopped shedding from day 17 ish after FEC1, but not that much each day, unless I wash or comb it. Have bought some dry shampoo to skip a wash & it was actually fine. Also only comb into place in the morning or if looking particularly horrendous. Have worn hats a couple of times to minimise loss, which HB thinks is mad. x
