What sort of wigs have you gone for Val and Fiona? Something like your normal style/colour or totally different?
Debbie, I’m trying not to look beyond the FEC just yet as otherwise as am trying to take one step at a time through this journey - I don’t always take my own advice though!
Barry I was lucky and my hair loss was even all over my head - a bit more on top but no big patches. It just looked thin, I kept it in a ponytail and that made it look better. Strangers wouldn’t have been able to tell.
Well the day has arrived and I’ve been awake since before 5. I still don’t know about the cold cap. I’ve had my hair cut short so even thinning will be obvious. I just don’t know if it’s worth it for me when they can’t guarantee the success.
Caffy, Peggy…thinking about you both today as well. Let’s do this!! Xx
Well its the morning after FEC 1, I have a slight headache and nauseous feeling and my tongue is tingly slightly, which is not too bad, However, I had had a slice of toast, cup of tea and glass of water and they all tasty foul, like raw chemicals. Took all my Meds as advised so will have to see what happens next.
I decided against the cold cap, as I was told it can be hit and miss, I didn’t want to sit an extra 2-3 hours in the unit, and as I suffer from headaches ordinarily, they did tell me I could suffer a bit. So in preparation I have had my long blonde hair cut into a every short graduated bob, I must admit I quite like it and the wig I have chosen is similar to my new style. Everyone needs to look at the pros and cons and make an informed decision that is right for them.
Morning everyone. I’ve been awake since around five as well. Now in bed with a very large cup of tea as I figure this might be one of the last that will taste good for a while. I am a real Northern tea drinker so this could be a big blow.
Jayne, here’s hoping your SEs don’t get any worse. Sound like you are coping well, apart from the disappointment of your breakfast. Look after yourself.
Caffy/Emma, good luck today. I’ll be thinking of you both and will see you on the other side.
And to everyone else, thanks for all the good wishes. It means a lot. xxxx
My understanding is that hair loss starts around day 14 - which is today for me! So far just body hair - my husband says I have a very smooth bum but my legs could still do with a shave.
I’ve not gone for a wig yet as going to see whether the cold cap works or not but so far so good.
I have been using the cordysol mouthwash and can tolerate it - the toothpaste on the other hand is the most disgusting taste ever and it did make me gag. Amusingly it says on the box that users usually get used to the taste after a couple of weeks! One use was enough for me unless I start t get any problems. I think they do a mint version though which might be more palatable.
Glad you are feeling better Jojo. I’m going to go for a short walk in the sunshine this afternoon.
Hi all. Back from FEC number one. Decided to give the cold cap a go after all. Horrid for the first 15 minutes but after that tolerable. Not sure how I’ll cope if hair gets much thinner though so we’ll see. Thought it was worth giving a try although I can quite understand how you would not want to spend the extra time on the unit. Drug infusion went really quickly - no more than 30 minutes I would say. I had a little cry when the nurse started which I think was just weeks of waiting to get started - she was really lovely looking after me. Now I just feel rather worn out, like I’m coming down with a cold. It’s weird sitting here waiting for something to happen.
My nurses’s main concern is that I ensure I open my bowels as she says that lots of sickness comes from constipation. Will the glamour of this disease never end!
Hope that you are getting on okay today Caffy and Chris.
I only got a £60 voucher from the NHS for my wig, and I have got to put another £180 to it, it seems to vary so much across the country, obviously the postcode lottery thing again, luckily my mum has offered to pay for mine, otherwise it would have just been hats and scarves for me. The don’t come cheap do they? Xx
Yep, thanks Barry. It feels good in a strange way. The whole process in the hospital is a lot less scary than you would imagine. Well, what I imagined anyway. All the staff were so lovely too. And lunch was even provided and they offered a packed lunch to my friend which I thought was a lovely gesture.
Jayne, do you mind me asking where you are getting your wig from? Does the NHS voucher limit you to certain outlets? Wig person is due to contact me early next week.
Yes, big cup of tea for the first 15 minutes which did help. I had taken some satsumas and a cereal bar with me but in the end didn’t eat as was catered for. Decided take advantage of our NHS’s finest cuisine instead. I guess it depends what time your appointment is. I was 11.00 so fell over the lunch period. x
