October 2017 Chemo Starters

Hi Meesh, I think we have the same philosophy with the cold cap. I have bought a few turbans - they can today. Figure that short hair is going to be such a shock (have always had bobbed hair or longer) that I will probably wear them anyway. Just tried them on and with a bit of lipstick on they didn’t look as bad as I feared!
I am going all out on the nutrition as much as possible. I think I have trouble processing my B vits and find spirulina and wheatgrass in the morning (in a green juice) has really helped me - not sure if I will stomach it after chemo though.
I have also been eating liver once a week since my surgery - have you tried liver pate? If you can stomach butter it is so easy to make and really delicious.

Hello Ladies,

Hope you are feeling better & home soon Ali.

Thanks for all your replies regarding my question, I have literally re read this whole October 2017 thread with a notepad making notes on what else to get in to eat, drink & occupy me whilst havng the chemo.

I’ve been for a wig fitting this mornng & hopefully getting that on Thuesday just before chemo starts

I am also toying with the idea of shaving off my hair before the chemo on Friday too, will see how I feel on Thursday.

Can I just ask about fingernails, what can I do to try & preserve them?

Claire xx

Hi Ruth, you might be surprised by the short hair. My hair had been past my shoulders for about 20 years and when I had it cut everyone loved it including me!

Good news about the liver, I’m not a huge fan but have eaten it fairly regularly over the last six months so will now add to the weekly diet.

Welcome Ruth!!  I also have found this forum such help since starting chemo last Wed…although wish someone had told me not to eat Chinese last nite lol!!  I’m gonna attempt a veg bake for tea and add extra spinach…I can’t stand liver or Guinness so won’t be opting for either of those I’m afraid!!  Went to Tesco today and had to open a punnet of grapes before I got to checkout as started to feel very strange!!

I also agree that that’s a lot of wee sue!!!

How are you doing Sam?

xx

Sorry you are still in hospital Ali, hopefully now it’s not the weekend you will be able to get the answers you need quicker. Welcome Ruth to the place no one wanted to come but it is a great support and everyone will understand what you are going through. I have been hit with fatigue really badly now. I’ve only been awake for a couple of hours in the last day or so and also have pain in my neck like my glands are throbbing. The nurses don’t seem concerned as my temperature is fine so just making the most of the extra sleep I’m getting for now. xx

Runnerbean, sorry to hear you’re not feeling too great, rest up and hopefully you’ll start to feel better.

karana, I also started to feel weird when I went to Tesco yesterday! I called the nurse today about feeling anxious as I seem to wake up with it and it continues in the morning but seems to go by evening time. She said that was quite normal during the first round and wasn’t concerned. She said I could take some of the lorazepam they prescribed me but I’m not going to do that as it’s not really that bad and those pills are addictive. I was wondering whether the anxious feeling is a withdrawal from all the drugs last week.

Evening All!!!

Ali is out of hospital. Hurrah!!! So hopefully she’ll be joining us later. Welcome Ruth. So sorry you’ve had to join the club ?

Definitely give the cold cap a whirl. It’s pretty grim (it made me sick during the actual chemo sesh - pretty sure it was the cold cap as I had no other nausea at all post chemo and I had fairly excruciating brain freeze for quite a lot of the sesh) but touch wood, it’s day 20 and still no sign of massive hair loss. I’ll probably wake up bald as a coot tomorrow now!! Ha. Noticed a few stray strands on my coat today but not sure if it any was more than I’d be shedding normally. I’m washing and brushing my hair so infrequently that I’m not getting rid of loose strands as I usually would.

Chemo round 2 on Wednesday (bloods permitting), so it’ll be interesting to see how the hair fares after that. Apparently it’s the worst one for hair loss…

Cherry Bakewell xx

Good luck on Wednesday Cherrybakewell! I hated cold cap too but will try to persist - like you no hair loss yet just odd strands. Am now on day 11 so a week behind you. Managed quite a full day today, drive in to work and did three hours. Lovely to see everyone! Came back did school run and have just cooked dinner. I find it helps to eat regular meals but I know today was just a good day! Hope you all have some good days to enjoy this week! Hugs xxC

Runnerbean- what day are you on! I had exactly those symptoms on Tuesday and Wednesday last week, and agin Friday and Saturday this week. The ups and downs are disconcerting but it’s wonderful when you have a good day and feel half normal again  hugs xxC

Good evening ladies, I don’t feel as though I’ve logged on for ages! Hello to all the new names ??

I’m now two weeks after my first FEC and I am completely back to being me, it’s great! My next EC is a week today so I’m going to make the most of this week without wearing myself out. I’ve bought a FitBit so I can hopefully use these good days to boost my fitness a bit.

I haven’t lost any hair yet but my first turban, scarf and sleep cap order arrived today.

I do however seem to be struggling with constipation more than usual, does anyone have any gentle remedies please?

Thank you and love to everyone x

Hi Claire-bell, I’m only on day 3 so still early days. Your the first person I have come across that had these same symptoms which makes me feel a bit better. I guess they are just not so common so don’t get mentioned as much.xx

Hi everyone. Glad to hear Ali is out of hospital. Yay! I’m day 11 and felt great today. Obviously been careful not to over do it. I did too much on Friday and it floored me over the weekend. Getting my working from home stuff setup and got some telephone training tomorrow. Brain is getting quite bored now and ready to get some exercise!

Thanks Cherry Bakewell good luck with round 2. Still no word from my unit on my dates but will try to be patient.
Mrsrims I am also nervous about nails and eyelashes - would love to hear any good tricks from anyone? I also plan to sit with pen and paper this evening to read through all the posts so I feel prepared. Just one day in the forum has made me feel better already ? Thank you ladies

Home swert home amd all good. Now for sleep xc

Fab news ali xx

Hope you have a restful night Ali xx

Hi Reboot, I was warned about the constipation and they gave me some laxido sachets which I was told to use the day after chemo if I wasn’t going as usual. They also recommended golden linseeds/ flax seeds (I got mine from holland & Barrett) but you need to be careful with them and introduce gradually as they can be quite strong apparently.

Ali, good to hear you are home that will make you feel much better!

Thanks Jay and Meesh! I’ll look those out ?
Wishing everyone restful nights xx

Amazingly I’m not bunged up which is a first for me! Although I didn’t go until Sunday morning but didn’t feel bad in that way. I eat a lot of veg and prunes and drink plenty

Morning ladies…hope u all had a restful nite…I left sea bands off last nite and debating whether to leave them off today!  Off to pick my wig up today!  Struggling imagining having to wear it yet…and also intrigued what I’m gonna look like hair less (don’t like the word bald ?) xx
