September 2023 Chemo Starters

@Camy_Radika so sorry to hear you had to go to hospital. It is the last news any of us want. Hopefully some rest and antibiotics will see you right. Much love.

I do the same after my EC and anti-sickness keeps me awake- eye mask and podcasts and even if I donā€™t think Iā€™ve slept, Iā€™ve definitely not heard it all. Helps to listen to familiar voices so youā€™re not paying attention, just a low murmur.
Iā€™ve taken the anti-sickness all with breakfast this second time and it helped a little, and am trying to have a few dried apricots a day to keep things moving, itā€™s working so far
Iā€™m trying not to touch my hair but it got a bit birds-nest like and I suspect Iā€™ve just brushed half of it out, :woman_facepalming:t2: going to brave a wash in the morning and will see whatā€™s left. Iā€™ve also got a really sore groin area, like a knicker elastic has rubbed. Nurse said it is common so will just keep an eye, not ideal when trying to get out and about for a walk! Sarah x

Iā€™m the same with my hair @plum1 I get so worried when I brush it. Itā€™s essential though, I met a lovely woman a bit further on with chemo than us who had similar hair to me (white woman with dark fine and curly hair). Sheā€™d cold capped but hadnā€™t brushed it and had ended up with a hand sized dreadlocked section. :broken_heart:
I felt for her as sheā€™d gone through all the discomfort of coldcapping but was going to have to chop it out. Iā€™ve been using my little girlā€™s tangle teaser style paddle brush as itā€™s quite gentle.
The steroids are strange, if Iā€™m honest I sort of like the buzz they give (I do lots on the days I take them and feel productive) but I crash after and worry about getting a steroid moon face. On EC Iā€™ve only been having two per day for two days after, plus 4 with the EC itself. Does anyone know how many you take with docetaxel? Xxxxx

On Paclitaxel they only gave me steroids with the infusion at first, then after reaction they prescribed some before and after. The newest prescription states day before, morning off and 6 hours after, but Iā€™m following what the doctor said. Like you steroids give me a buzz and stop the sleeping so take a sleeping tablet. Also Iā€™ve seen first hand what steroids can do to bloat your body and then hard to shift when you stop. So the fewer the better. Doxetaxel is possibly the same as theyā€™re similar drugs.

Up early today, chemo at 9amšŸ˜ž

Oooh thanks for recommendation annemanc, will try that one! X

Hi Camy, really hope the antibiotics sort the cough out and allow you some sleep, you must be shattered. Sending big hugs xxx

Good luck with chemo today @naughty_boob :smiling_face_with_three_hearts::pray:. On paclitaxel only they also gave me steroids in IV but none after. Nose bleed and stomach cramps this morning but will try to go and see the horses, the fresh air will do my good.
I seem to be getting pain on left side rib, similar to muscle pain like bra strap is stuck as well but am paclitaxel. Will mention it.

Good luck with chemo today naughtyboob, mine is at 2.30 today, just paclixatel. Hoping to manage without picc line till after half-term.
Had a weird symptom last night, temperature went very low - 35.1 - and had to ring emergency number. Luckily after about 25 mins it came back up so avoided hospital this time. Anyone else experienced this?
Has anyone managed to get a physio referral for post op pain?

I called cancer hair care and got a call back yesterday. They gave me loads of advice and were very supportive. I am shedding a lot this week but keep combing they said to remove dead hair and avoid knots and oil it. I oil my scalp 4 5 times a day and I look like a member of Busted group with greasy hair :grimacing: but if it helps I donā€™t care. Only just started treatment so ofc early still
The cold cap made me sick Tuesday but they said it may help regrowth so hope my body will tolerate again.

Good luck today with your chemotherapy, I will read all your posts, I will start paclixatel in a few weeks and I am worried about sides effects :disappointed:.
Take care :heartpulse: all my best wishes dear

I have Percy and Reed give me strength shampoo conditioner and their scalp treatment. All decided for hair loss, not necessarily chemo hair loss. Itā€™s a gentle sulphate free shampoo, lightly perfumed. I had used it before for menopause. Oil is not greasy. The also do a wonder oil for the hair. Had only some shedding with cold cap and like @annemanc I use a tangle teezer.

Found it originally on QVC and Alison Young has a code for 20% off scalp concentrate items
Code :ALISON20 set is worth over Ā£120 but with code its Ā£52 and free delivery.
https://www.percyandreed.com/products/strengthening-starter-kit. It has Rosemary oil in shampoo conditioner and oil which seems to be good to hair growth.

Infusion finished now 45 minutes cold cap before I can go home.

@daffodil1 be thinking of you this after noon with your next infusion.

Hugs to you all :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Hey Camy the side effects have been manageable so far. I donā€™t think itā€™s the one to worry for meā€¦I can still function so far. Obviously only week 2 but I take the good weeks where I can
Felt tired but no nauseas. Nose bleed and out of breath, stomach cramps morning but eases off. Dry skin and scalp.
Hope you are fine with itā€‹:crossed_fingers:šŸ©·:crossed_fingers:. Big hugs :purple_heart:

Thank you, Iā€™ve just ordered the scalp oil duo, a mini tangle teaser and some scarves :see_no_evil:
Youā€™ve been very lucky if youā€™ve just had thinning. I feel like Iā€™ve probably shed half my hair in the last day or so- itā€™s very thick so I may get lucky and retain some but Iā€™m not sure. I have to wash it in the morningā€¦ My nurse said this morning that the EC is the harshest part and hopefully might see some regrowth once I switch to Paxitacel for the second bit- we shall see!

Does anyone follow Rosamund Dean on insta? I found her a couple of weeks ago when I was at a bit of a low and found her account of her chemo and surgery etc to be really honest and helpful- and she also talks through her hair loss and shows the regrowth etc. She is a journalist and also wrote a book that I keep meaning to buy, reconstruction. (About the whole BC process, not just the op).

Not heard of her but will look her up. Iā€™m on Paclitaxel with Herceptin told cold cap can give good results but itā€™s not easy, they had new machines today and they were even colder! Paxman are clear that you can still loose up to 50% with Paclitaxel.

There is also this study with Paxman products

I hope you enjoy and get on with the oils.

Hi @plum1 yes I read Rosamundā€™s book Reconstruction, I got it a few days before I found out Iā€™d need chemotherapy. Itā€™s worth a read, lots of helpful tips and info.
Thereā€™s also a big section on how to cope when active treatment ends, not read that part yet (thought Iā€™d get through this slog first). All about thinking what you want from life and navigating fears about recurrence etc. xxxx

Hi Plum1, not followed RD on Insta but gave her book and really enjoyed it. Very relevant to me as she also was writing from a triple negative diagnosis point of view.
