September 2023 Chemo Starters

Really glad you’re starting to feel better @naughty_boob . I bet you’ll feel much happier once you’re back home. It must be a worry being around poorly people with the infection risk.

I’ve also felt much better this morning. Still rough but in a more normal way! :joy: Docetaxel is a whole new thing to get used to. @daffodil1 I have it every three weeks so fortunately got a couple of weeks til I roll again. Xxxx

Hi dear, thank you for your kind words.
Oncology team referred already to radiotherapy department, and told them that my lungs are clear and I can start radiotherapy.
On Monday I will have the scan and from 29 November I will start the radiotherapy, that’s the news I got today.
Hopefully my cough will not stop me. But in case the cough is worst, they will push a few days the radio.
I am better than yesterday, so hopefully steroids will work. Tamoxifen hormone therapy and injection every month too, I will start with radiotherapy together.
Big hug :hugs:
Take :sparkling_heart:

Sat on a radiator to make call and then they came to check temp it was 37.7. I did say I’d been doing exercises for my radiotherapies they came in and then I remembered I’d sat on radiator. She came back 10 minutes later 37.5. So hopefully still ok to go home.

I didn’t even think twice about sitting there it felt warming in my bum which was nice, I didn’t feel hot! I’ve turned it off for now and will be keeping well away from it!

I totally get what you mean @pinklilli3s it’s hard as people want to help but you can’t really explain what going through this is like. Plus I don’t want anyone’s pity/the awful head tilt thing. I find that particularly annoying. V glad to have you guys.

After a relatively good ride on EC I’ve been hit w all the side effects at once on docetaxel… oral thrush, vag thrush, taste changes, piles (!), cold sore, aches, bone pains, tiredness, nausea, peripheral neuropathy. So bloody tedious, I hate being ill. Still doing stuff everyday and getting out for long walks but feels harder going. The one that’s getting me down is the taste changes, I can’t stand my normal morning brew. :weary: I’m a Mancunian… don’t come after my cuppa stupid chemo!

Does anyone have any delicious drinks or food they’d recommend? Xxxx

Ps. Just found this which really cheered me up! Chemotherapy may take your taste buds, but don’t let it take your love of food | Breast Cancer Now

Hi @annemanc , I’ve popped over from Oct group as I saw your post. I’m on my 2nd round of Doxetaxal and have quite a few of the SE’s you have!

just wanted to say I got a Little lifts chemo bag and discovered a cordial in it which I love, as water and other drinks taste right off. It’s Norfolk cordial Blackcurrant and Quince. Not sugary tasting and tastes quite calming, if a cordial can do such a thing ha! it’s bloomin expensive to buy though but I decided if it would help me get my fluid intake up its worth it. might be worth getting the Little Lifts bag to try if you haven’t done so already ( can send a link for it - its amazing!) xxx

I got one of their boxes… will dig out the cordial! Think mine is strawberry. Great idea thank you. Sorry you have same SEs @copperycat guess it’s par for the course. Did your taste return between cycles?

Am also thinking marmite might be good :+1:t2:

I’ve tried Lipton fruit teas and they work ok, peach and mango. I hate being ill and no one really understands what you go through. Even my mum about the sickness she was cooking her food at 4pm last night because she hungry (it’s 5pm I. France and she had not adjusted) but had to have a chat w her and explained that when I am feeling sick the last thing I need is food smell at 4pm  she can be very argumentative and it’s hard when you’re unwell. I don’t have the energy!
Really sorry you’re hit hard w side effects on this cycle. Currently at hospital for transfusion and it felt weird at first, cold and hot and feeling a bit sick but starting to feel better
All the best for the rest of the treatment and make sure you speak to nurse about your side effects.
Bis hugs xxx

Oh marmite would be good , though I’m all for sweet the moment as everything tastes salty or like wallpaper paste!

I got a semblance of normality in week 3 , but not great tbh, maybe 60% better . But I’d take that now  xxx

I know what you mean about food smells. It’s so hard. MY OH keeps asking me what I want to eat , and then rhymes out the options . I’ve explained that even the thought of food makes me nauseous . I literally can only eat in the moment and even then … well :sob: xxx

Yes exactly that indeed some here, I was so happy when I was able to watch British bake off without feeling and enjoying it !!

Hi ladies. I have not been on for a while. Full-time work and then the horror of days 1-7 cycle three. Just pulling out the other side now. I see others have been having a hard time whilst I have been offline. I hope things are improving for everyone and we really are all getting through it. One day at a time eh.

@annemanc I am also on Docetaxel. The taste changes are really hard. For me they peak on day seven then subside again before the next treatment. On day seven there is a disgusting taste in my mouth all day and water even tastes foul. The things that help whilst I am eating them are (in no particular order): ginger beer, pickled onion monster munch, polos, queasy drop sweets sour raspberry flavour, very strong ribena, salt and vinegar crisps, herbs on food help too. Today is day eight (thank the lord) and the horrible taste is receding. So in a couple of days things will taste a bit normal again. So it might be worth trying your tea later in the cycle. I hope you manage to find some foods that help and do share if you do. I am open to all suggestions. Good luck and hopefully you’ll also be feeling better soon.

The other thing I have realised this cycle is i have temporary lactose intolerance so I am now avoiding milk and cheese mid-cycle as this seems to be the cause of my terrible diarrhoea mid-cycle (not saying it has gone away but it is nowhere near as bad).

Ah man @frazzledmcsazza i don’t know how you’re managing to work on docetaxel! That’s hardcore. Thanks for the food tips. I’m on day 7 now so hopefully tomorrow will be better. Going to make a chicken curry for tea from scratch with lots of spice to sort out my taste buds.

Sending love, hope you’re getting some time to rest xxxxx

@annemanc if you are like me you are heading out of the worst of it. I am on a three week cycle. Day 1 to 7 the worst. By day 10 largely feeling okayish and pretty normal in last week. I only work for 7 or 8 days at the end of each cycle so it is just about manageable. It is a good distraction tbh and at least when i get to the end it won’t be such a shocker going back to work.

Hope the curry was nice and you start the slow road to feeling better from tomorrow.

I like to drink Berry fruits tea with honey, or pine tea
Food dose not taste nice at all, but I still enjoy a salad raw, cucumber with tomatoes, avocado, red onion, pepper and salt a bit vinegar and dill, one boiler egg and brown bread.
I also like stuffed red pepper with meat, rice , onion and carrots, and one spon of grek yoghurt. You can find recipe on Google.
Hopefully you will try and enjoy.

Hi everyone, I’ve been a bit AWOL too, really sorry everyone has had a rough time with hospital stays and side effects hitting hard. Sending you all my love x

I am ticking along, went into a bit of an anxiety spiral after my last EC two weeks ago, I don’t deal too well with the unknown and all my reading up about the myriad of side effects on Pacli send me into a bit of a hole. Really trying to find a balance between being informed and being terrified! But, I had the first one yesterday so at least we’ve started, 1 down, 11 to go!. I’ve decided to stop the cold cap though, all I’ve got left is a bit of a stripe down the middle and a couple of rats tails at the back, the cold was just too intense and painful with less of a protective layer. Ah well. I tried! Thank god for hats and winter. I still can’t be bothered with a wig.

I had my first Phesgo injection yesterday, is anyone else on that? I’ve got to have one every three weeks for a year, I think it’s my version of herceptin. Quite a long, slow injection in the thigh- stung a bit and have a nice bruise to report this morning!

In terms of taste buds @copperycat @pinklilli3s @annemanc I’ve gone a bit off milk as I’ve had a manky white tongue in the middle days of EC- so tried to avoid milky drinks. I’ve been enjoying Twinings Superblends Defence, it’s a lemon/ginger with extra vit C and echinacea. Tried the Sainsbury’s cheaper version and it was too much green tea flavour
I’ve also found some nice cordials in Sainsbury’s- near the tonic water and booze, a lime and ginger and a hibiscus, both nice in sparking water for a change.

Have my parents here again this weekend, there’s already a bit of sniping from mum, and I cooked dinner… really need to review the job description of “coming to help” :joy:
Hopefully if I feel ok, I can persuade that the visits don’t need to be quite so regular in the run up to Christmas!
