Please find me a space on those comfy cushions, with a massive supply of ibuprofen please. Not been a good day.
However the surgery gremlins were defintily on my case today.
Started off well - WBC back up to 1.99 so Tax 1 goes ahead tomorrow as planned.
I arrived at the day surgery ward at 12 as requested for my Hickman Line. Was seen by consultant who told me it could take as little as 10 minutes or up to an hour. I’d be going down at about 2. Finally went at 3.30.
Apparently my veins run in peculiar places (too close to arteries and they hide under my clavicle) and are also very small - described as delicate and ladylike (don’t laugh!) which might explain why they’ve been so badly hit by the FEC witch. He injected local in about three or four places (a small scratch he said - ha! There speaks a man who’s never had it injected that deeply with a needle fit for an elephant!)
Couldn’t get the line in anywhere near my shoulderblade due to peculiar veins so cue more local jabs and he tried rooting around for the vein a bit further over. No joy. tried at the base of my neck. More local jabs, more rooting, still no joy.
By now I was in tears, my ECG had started to go wobbly and I was, to put it mildyly, stressed. Finally got sedation , although only very slight.
he was determined to get it in as my veins are so bad and I needed it for tomorrow. So, more locals and a fourth try, higher up on neck. Success finally, and relief all round. The other hole to get the line out on my boob was a doddle.
Came out of theatre after 1 and 3/4 hours, into recovery ward. Then had a chest X ray which found that the line was in too far (fairly common) so off came the dressings, out came the stitches on both holes, in went more local anaesthetic. Then a bit of tugging, more stitches, more dressings and an hour weight for another x ray as the machine had been whizzed off elsewhere.
Finally got home at 8.15 pm, feeling totally slegdehammered and in pain. Roll on the ibuprofen.
Still at least I can use it tomorrow and the poorlyarm gremlin has hopefully been well and truly kicked into orbit.
Just need to wait a few months now for my poor veins to recover, but at least now the Hickman fairy will wave its magic (if a little tarnished after today) wand and all will be well.
Sorry no dancing on the bar at the JM for me tonight - a nice cup of horlicks is about my limit!
Thanks oodles for all the good wishes - at least it’s done now and for anyone else comtemplating it, I was a bit of an exception so don’t let it put you off!
