Travel Insurance for those with BC diagnosis

Hi everyone.Try out this web site www.insurepink.co.uk. It was initiated by a lady called Fiona Macrae with the Equity Insurance Group. Fiona had breast cancer and like us all was fed up with large quotes for holiday insurance. It seems to give very reasonable rates and cover.

Sorrry all - I see insurepink is already mentioned in prevous discussions. Seems to have some good reviews for those that have finished treatment.

You have to have finished treatment for at least a month before they will consider you,. I have just taken out an annual policy with Aberdeen insurance that cost £55 for worldwide cover with a £500 excess for bc. I explained that I am still undergoing treatment (radiotherapy and herceptin to go starting next month),. Not a problem and they convered me with immediate effect. And the woman I dealt with was excellent.

Just a word of warning. Yes it’s great to have this new company and they are def the cheapest I have found but, I got a quote for me & hubby for 5 days in Prague. £39 for both, only £14.70 for me. I found a quote elsewhere for OH for £7 so decided to get us both insured seperately, me with insure pink, him with GO.

When I read the small print for him, it said he wouldn’t be covered if anyone he was travelling with had a pre-exsisting medical problem!

So I rang Insure Pink back and got it for us both from them.

I hate insurance companies!

Probably not the right thing to do but when we go on holiday I never mention the fact that I have had BC when taking out insurance, I understand that these policies don’t cover you for pre existing conditions anyway and rightly or wrongly I feel that if we are only away for a week nothing is likely to happen that will require immediate attention. Maybe I will be proved wrong one day.

There’s also a company called www.miaonline.co.uk who are excellent. They also cover people with secondaries like myself who are still on active treatment. I have always been quoted around £300 for Europe (they’re not doing worldwide at the moment but hope to soon) but Mia have quoted me £44.50 for 2 weeks. You can only book up to 2 months prior to travel and you must discuss with your oncologist that they are happy for you to travel and that it’s noted in your file (they don’t need to see a copy of this) but will contact your oncologist if there is a claim to make sure that you have cleared it with your oncologist. They also give you a note of where your nearest hospital is while you’re abroad. I have found them to be extremely helpful. Most other companies, as soon as you mention you have secondaries or are on chemo put the premium so high that it’s not practical to take the insurance out.

Before I had secondaries I used to declare my breast cancer but that I didn’t want it covering (so they put it on my document that I had a pre-existing medical condition that wasn’t covered) because what are you going to get ill with while on holiday once you are out of your initial treatment? So I agree wholeheartedly with Jan - you’re not going to become ill with primary breast cancer while on holiday (unless you have other conditions as well).

Hi

Just had a look on the insurepink website and it states 'your policy does not cover for re-occurring or pre-existing medical conditions. You must also tell us if your health or medication changes between buying this policy and travelling and if you have ever had a heart related problem, a stroke, cancer … and then it goes on to state that you must phone Travellers Healthcheck to see if cover is available.

So I’m confused! I presume this means, like many other insurance companies, that they won’t cover people with secondaries? Back to the same old problem and that’s where Miaonline are brilliant as they do cover us.

I am looking to try and find travel insurance for America
Have looked on Mia’s website but they don’t cover the Usa
Does anyone have any suggestions for other companies i could get a quote from -i am flying to San Francisco at the end of November

AN UPDATE
I rang Aberdeen Insurance and spoke to a lovely lady
Got yearly policy for myself, my husband and my son for £75 (one off trip charge would have been 37.00 per adult)
This includes travel to America. Excess was 75 for everything apart from BC which was 500
Really pleased now looking forward to my holiday
Jools

Hi Julie

Have you been diagnosed with secondaries? I’ve found that every company that I’ve rung are a bit reluctant to cover me or it’s more than Mia is. It’s a shame that Mia don’t cover outside of Europe yet.

The other two companies that I’ve used before are www.free-spirit.com or www.freedominsure.co.uk Both of those would cover my secondaries although I haven’t contacted them since I’ve been back on chemo.

Hope this helps.

hi janice i totally agree with you . i dont tell them after all a lot of people dont even get travel insurance. i have had a week in corfu a week in majorca and a week in malta. i have booked for next july with thomsons who only ask for a 50 pound deposit and the rest pay 8 weeks before travel i have not taken any insurance out yet. i will leave it till nearer the time and see if i feel well enough to go if i do i will get normal insurance and if i dont i will cancel and loose my 50 pounds. y should we suffer. the chances of anything happening with this type of illness in your fortnights holiday would b very rare i am sure. perhaps people can let us know on here if been caught out while on holiday with bc thanks for reading this have a good weekend all julie

I have posted elsewhere but if you take out travel insurance, to make sure that you are covered for EVERYTHING ELSE not BC things you MUST let them know of pre-existing conditions whatever they are - ingrowing toenails… or they wont pay out on anything… and then you have paid for nothing. This is not a new thing if you have high BP or anything else…take some advice or ask when you ring them. However you may not want to bother with any insurance if you are happy in europe as they have an excellent medical service in the EU, and you can just fly homequite quickly.

Enjoy your hols everyone

I’d like to say a big ditto to wisdens post. If you are not going to declare pre-existing conditions there is no point in taking out insurance at all. If they discover ANY pre-existing condition, that you failed to mention, then even that bad case of holiday tummy or broken ankle they are at liberty to deny any payout. Oh, and the British Consulate can’t do much to help either. No insurance and you are on your own.
Not certain, but there is the possibility that anyone traveling with you would also be excluded too.
Seems an enormous risk to me.

hI pink dove -yes i have got secondaries
Aberdeen were happy to cover me for my secondaries and for me to be insured to go to america
the 500 excess was for BC including my bone mets
i also have a thyroid problem which i also declared
Price was still 75.00 for three of us for a yearly policy which i thought was very reasonable

Jools

Hi Jools

Interesting to know about Aberdeen - thanks! I will definitely give them a ring when we start to think about our next holiday because although Mia are really helpful they only cover Europe at the moment but they are hoping to cover worldwide in time.

I’ve also never been able to get an annual policy so thanks for this info. I shall take it to the support group this week and let them know as well!!

Take care.

I too had enormous problems with this as I had a recurrence with lymph node involvement. Could not get any reasonable annual cover from anyone - and I want annual as we frequently pop over to France. Agree, you must advise any company of pre-existing conditions as you are not covered at all otherwise. I now ensure with Direct Line - £75 annual policy for both of us (and OH has some health conditions too), which covers me for everything except BC. Obviously this means not booking your hols until quite close to the travel date, as you would not be covered for cancellation, but as the other girls have said, BC is unlikely to cause serious problems during a 14 day trip abroad, requiring immediate treatment. However, I might give Aberdeen a try next year, as we will both be older and OH is going to be over 65 - so a problem in itself.

Will be interesting to know if you get on ok Birgit if you try Aberdeen Insurance.

I have to have travel insurance with my secondaries being covered (because of spine involvement) and I do feel discriminated against by some of the insurance companies.

This is where this forum is brilliant as otherwise I wouldn’t have known about all these different websites, especially as most of them say that they will cover you but not for b.c. - no good for me!!

Pinkdove

I managed to get a worldwide policy with Columbus Direct for about £165 for the year myself.& OH and 2 teenage children.
The excess is £50.I also have hypertension and my OH has medical problems.
So any one having trouble give them a try.
Even if you travel within Europe despite reciprocal agreement for treatment, if you have insurance that excludes bc they may not assist you home if you have missed flights etc.
I work for a company that repatriates people who have been sick whilst abroad and the bills can become very expensive so
be careful.
