I have just spoken to the Breast Care Nurse to try and get more information; she intimated they are so behind, it might not make this Thursday’s meeting, meaning next weeks proposed appointment might be cancelled too!
On the up side, they will phone me on Friday, to let me know the basics, if my case did make Thursday’s meeting. I think she said she should hear tomorrow whether it would do and would e-mail to let me know, so I am just up in the for even longer! Basically, they have too much work on to keep up, no doubt NHS cuts have something to do with this!
Christ Amanda they really are putting you through it! What hospital is this? I know they only have their MDT meetings on a Thursday but i had biopsy and lumpectomy results on time on the thurs afternoons straight afterwards, a back log is no excuse when this is peoples lives they are dealing with, a few extra weeks waiting on treatment wont make any difference but you just need to know, i dearly hope you get some answers on Friday i really do, in my experience everything from results onwards was the easy bit, nothing is worse than the waiting xxx
Hi Dezdi, welcome to the Forum. My surgeon discussed the clinical trial too but as I didn’t have any nodes involved didn’t go ahead, there are some ladies having a discussion about it in the surgery section ( going through treatment ).If you post a question there they may be able to give out more information .Good luck with whatever you decide.
Hi Dezdi I think there are some ladies talking about the clinic trial in the surgery section if you puts a question there you may get more information to help you with the decision re what happens next.I was to I would be offered trial if I had positive sentinel nodes but it is random which treatment you get, I looked at the research and it is pointing towards no better outcome from surgery than no surgery or from radiation to armpit but may still require chemo.A few ladies on the thread are going through or about to go through chemo.
Hi everyone, I just wanted to say hello. My name’s Elaine and I am 47 with 2 boys - 4 and 7.
Not sure where to start but I was diagnosed about 2 weeks ago with grade 3 cancer - at the time they said the lump was small -1.2 cm I think - and that they would do a lumpectomy. I have my mri tomorrow which I’m guessing should either confirm, or deny, that. Results on Friday. The first week I just cried, but the second I’ve been really up and down - sometimes euphoric just to be alive, other times getting through it with black humour and other times reverting to crying. As I’ve read over and over on here, the wait is the worst bit - completely doing my head in and I’m just at the start of this life changing journey.
I have an operation booked in for the 15th, we’re supposed to be moving house on 23rd and I’ve just been offered a new job - talk about all at once!! Can any of you who have already had your operation let me know how long you were in hospital for and how you felt the week after? My mum had a mastectomy 7 years ago and was on a drip for a week - is that standard or would it just be for a lumpectomy?
Hi Elaine , welcome to the thread , if you are having lumpectomy like Dezdi said unless you have op very late on and are struggling to come round from anaesthetic you will be home same day, a bit groggy and sore the next day but likely the second day up and about without too much problem. ,most pain discomfort seems to be from where they remove your sentinel nodes and you can get some swelling, occasionally may need draining but not drains unless you are having a more complicated procedure .I would have coped with moving house a week later as long as I was not doing and lifting of boxes etc .
Hi Jobey, the waiting is really hurting at the moment, I understand the hospital can’t cope with the amount of work, but as you say, this is people’s lives…maybe it won’t affect the outcome physically, but is bringing down mentally for sure! I can’t say which hospital as it is against the forum rules.
As as for recovery after lumpectomy, it is fairly normal to be treated as a day case, op in the morning, discharge in the afternoon. Tired for a few days but pain not too bad. Just don’t overdo it and avoid heavy lifting during the house move! If the job isn’t strenuous you should be ok, it will keep your mind off things for sure, it’s always the blooming waiting that is so tortuous!
You are allowed to mention the hospital just not particular docs ,hope you get answers on Friday Amanda, very hard to think about anything else til you know what happens next , life on pause.
I promise you will feel better after Friday Amanda no matter what the outcome ,because you will know what happens next and when and can begin to get your head around it and make plans again around whatever treatment you have.
Hi Amanda, Jill is right. The waiting is the worse thing but come Friday you’ll know the way ahead and you will deal with whatever this is. We’ve all been in your situation unfortunately but it’s amazing how much strength you will find to handle it. There will be good and not so good days but we’re here for you through both. Today I’m going to see the radiotherapy consultant and am expecting a lot of hanging around. Unfortunately my hospital Leicester Roysl Infirmary has one of the busiest oncology units in the UK, a victim of it’s very good early detection of cancers, especially BC. Bitterswet problem really.
Hopefully you will be in and out quickly Francine, was probably the quickest appointment I had, checked healing of wound then went through pros and cons of radiotherapy, signed consent form.
Bless you Amanda I hate the wait too but on Friday things will be clearer.
1st chemo done. Just resting can’t say I feel fabulous but not as bad as I thought. Head a little floating, achy and feel sick ( just had some toast so fingers crossed). Let’s see how I go. So many drugs !!! I have drawn a chart to help me. OH now had booked the next 6 days off so I am resting xxxx
Yep Barry lots of water and tablets. Luckily most of them are tiny so easy to take. I really think the scary bit is the Unknown. I asked my chemo nurse lots of questions she was great. The worse part was my veins not playing ball so I am having a picc line inserted before the next one xxx
Ange, so glad your OH has booked time off, you can focus on yourself now. The picc line is great I’ve forgotten I even have mine, will make things easier next time. Xxxx
Glad you’re not feeling too awful ange, fingers crossed it doesn’t give you too many SE …it’s a harsh regime but does do the trick so hold that thought x x
