Starting chemo in February 2012

Hi

Lynn

Sorry about your latest experience. Maybe the injection was just an added boost of the steroids that we normally receive in the bag before chemo. Hasn’t happened to me so can’t really comment with any knowledge. One thing I do know though is that the chemo nurses have masses of experience so I am sure that they did what you needed and what they knew to be right. Good news that you are feeling good. I always have the neulasta injection 24 hours after chemo to boost immune system and my bloods have been good to date so think that is a good thing.

Hope out are feeling OK still. I have just got over FEC3 and next one is TAX which brings new SEs to deal with.

Gill - Rock of Ages and Steps - what a fantastic combination

Hilly - welcome. See thatbyoubhave started your tax . Am a little apprehensive about moving onto that - not sure what SEs to expect.

Pauline - so glad boiler fixed. Enjoy your bath.

Debster - have you started your tax yet. I haven’t really changed diet apart from making lots of juices (with beet root, green veg, fruits etc). Some taste nicer than others. Are you doing anything different?

Rosie - wishing you a speedy return to your own bed xx

I am feeling miles better. Still find it difficult to stay up in the evening and had to say to my two girls tonight that if I am short tempered I don’t always mean it. They are 14 and 12 and are being fantastically good at dealing with everything and are taking very good care of me. Hvae meeting with surgeon tomorrow. Hoping that tumour will have shrunk some more.

Sleep well everyone.

Jane xx

Hi All
Hope you’re all doing ok?
Welcome Hilly!
Pauline I’m glad you’re feeling better. I started to feel bette on the tax the same day as you - so basically it really hit me on the Saturday - slept and felt rubbish for 24 hours then a bit better on Sunday and a bit better again on Monday so managed to drop off the painkillers and be a bit better on Tuesday. Didn’t make it out of the house til Thursday though! Still a bit more achy than usual and the last couple of days have developed a horrible taste in my mouth - I’m ok when I’m eating but water tastes vile again which I’m upset about! Jane, I was really worried about tax but it hasn’t been as bad as I thought honestly

Debster - re food, I’ve had a lot more smoothies and I read that cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower are good cance fighters so I’ve been trying to have more. I’ve also discovered non alcoholic wine and beer, and having read all the stuff on alcohol and breast cancer wonder whether I should just never drink again. We also asked my oncologist what she thought of the aspirin thing and she said that if my stomach is ok (after chemo is complete) she sees no reason not to take it as the evidence does stack up even though they don’t know why it works.
I’m so sorry some of you are having a few issues with your docs, I feel incredibly well looked after by mine. Had a weird experience with my gp this week, was asked in (the usual 45 minute wait in a room with lots of sick people ) for him to fill in an online form about my health which basically took 5 minutes and was mostly concerned with whether I had a carer. I think if I had problems I could have raised them but as I don’t it was a bit awkward!!

Right, sending loads of love to you all g xx

Morning all.
Well its day 5 i think after number 4. Last of my steriods today and already started with the sore throat. I keep saying need to keep well.
Both los woke up at 7 on a saturday whats all that about. Oh kept them occupied till he went to work at 7.30 but then i had to get up. So i’m very tired again.
Just praying the d stays away and i can carry on drinking water, thats what dehrayted me last time and dont want to be in hospital for another 5 days.
I’ve been feeling really rubbish the last week and angry about everything. But need to just concentrate on and get through it. only 2 more to go, fingers crossed…
Then a break then rads then who knows if having tamoxifen at the same time or another break…No one tells me things.
I have managed to get some physio after 3 months yeah, starts in 2 weeks. then i can be prepared for rads.
Got so much to sort out work, redundancy, passports as we are supposed to be booking a hol for sept. Hope everyone has a good weekend.
Love fran

Goldie - I agree the care I have had has been fab considering the pressure these depts are under. Thanks for the veggie tips and I’ve also been worrying about wine but I luvv it and not sure I could be one a TT shame on me! I Will have do some research into food etc

Leeds , I admire you having to cope with kids as well as treatment , easy for me to say but chin up girl and look forward to your sept holiday x

Big hugs to you all and have a great day. Xxx

Hi All

Feeling so much better - had two glasses of wine last night and think I had a bit of a hangover this morning. Like you Debster I love wine but think I will probably moderate my intake once this is all over.

Just got back from a meeting with my surgeon. My lumps are shrinking nicely - she could still feel one but another she can’t find any more so that’s good news. Also now have a date for my MX and recon - 7th July which is 4 weeks after my last chemo. Am really pleased because hopefully I will be recovered enough to go to athletics at Olympics on 4th August.

Goldie - glad Tax hasn’t been as bad as you thought (even if you are just saying that to make me less worried). Mine is on 30th April which is a Monday so by your posts I envisage that the worse side effects will start on the Friday/Saturday.

Am feeling very positive today after my appointment. Going to try and play tennis and then go out for a meal with my OH and daughters. Have a very busy week planned next week - all lovely social stuff. Hope I don’t wear myself out!!

Have a good weekend everyone

Jane xx

Jane
I promise I’m not just saying it - it’s not brilliant but I’d read loads of stuff on the horrors of it so it genuinely isn’t as bad as I’d feared!
Enjoy the tennis, I’m off to walk the dog  xxxx

I had my first tax 9 days ago. Have had joint pains and other SEs but rather this than the nausea from the FEC. xxx

Morning lovelies

Thanks Goldie and Samlou for the kind words on TAX , Im really worried but keep telling myself that no one has died from having chemo and its got to be done.

Promised myself that id do some research re food etc yesterday and found this:
“Mama read so much about the dangers of drinking alcohol and eating chocolate that she immediately gave up reading”… Will give this some series thought !

Lovely and sunny at mo off to ride my lovely boy and make the most of my energy, hope you all have a fab day and thinking of you Rosie hope you escape out of hospital today and into your lovely bed. Xxx

Hi Ladies,

Hilly - welcome to the group. Hope you get lots of support from it.

Has anyone on FEC had their 4th one yet?? I’ve got mine on Tuesday and am beginning to dread it as I still feel really tired from number 3. Hardly did anything but rest yesterday and didn’t get up til half 12 today (this is so unlike me!) Stupidly, I didn’t ask my onc about tiredness when I saw him on Friday as I thought it’s something we just have to put up with.

Sorry to moan!
Enjoy the rest of your Sunday.
Love Rach xx

Hi Rach, sorry but I’m due my 4th FEC on Wednesday so day after you but I agree with you no. 3 was my hardest by far…really tired with no energy & I’m dreading no.4!!! Feel sick just thinking bout it but hey only 2 more after next week eh!!! Keep positive & let’s hope no.4 not as bad as we are thinking!!!

Jo

Hello ladies,

Had my fourth Fec on Tuesday. Worst one yet, still feel horrible. Supposed to get PICC in tomorrow but cancelled it until the Monday after. Just not up to it. No energy, nausea, hot flushes, sore head, sore everything. Bleeuurrgghghghghghgh. Humph.

Two to go. Then herceptin. The joys.

Hoping I pick up this week.

Will have to have a proper read back but hope everyone is doing well.

Ann xx

Sorry you are feeling so rough Ann. FEC 3 was bad for me - must be cumulative!

I managed to play tennis yesterday, lovely at the time but exhausted afterwards. Was supposed to be going out for dinner but got take-away instead.

I have good week ahead (it’s all relative!) so lots planned before no 4 on 30th April. No more FEC for me though, I’m a Tax girl from now on!!

Bought myself some de-alcoholised wine to see what it tastes like. Don’t hold out much hope that it will taste like e real thing but will let you all know.

Jane

Hi ladies,
Day 11 after FEC 3 and like the rest of you this one has been the worst so far. Had a friend down most of this week and could hardly do anything. I fed him cheese on toast for lunch and frozen pizzas for dinner one day, which is something I never thought I’d do for a guest. haha Started feeling better yesterday in time for one of my best friend’s birthday…had a lovely day round hers with all the kids and husbands and lots of chocolate cake and fizzy pink wine, then a few of us girls went out dancing last night. I didn’t get in till 3am! :open_mouth: Probably explains why I’ve hardly moved off the sofa today.

I’m going to the Penny Brohn Cancer Centre in Bristol this week from Tues-Thurs. I must admit, I am mostly looking forward to the break from my family. I know that sounds awful, but even though my dh is great at picking up the slack, I never really get a break where I can switch off and rest (other than Mondays which is the one day all three are at school).

Hilly, welcome and thanks for sharing your experiences so far of Tax. Like a lot of the others, I’m moving on to that next and wonder how it will be.

Ann, sorry you’re finding your fourth FEC so hard - they certainly do seem to get worse each time. What are the SEs of Herceptin? Hope you feel better very soon!

Rosie, enjoy being home and take it easy for a few days!

Debster, I ate very healthily and mostly organically before all this, so feel like there’s not a lot I can cut out or add, but I have been drinking lots more green tea and making more effort to eat broccoli, cabbage and cauli several times a week. I’ve also been drinking green smoothies (the kids enjoy them, too). I’m really interested in diet, though, and have been paying more attention to things like Omega 3 vs Omega 6 and I’ve cut right down on dairy. I quite like the almond and coconut milk you can get in Sainsburys. I have found that the lack of alcohol in my shopping trolley makes up for buying more expensive/healthier ingredients.

Hope everyone has a good week…let’s hope we get some sunshine, too!

Carrie x

Hi Jane
Re dealcoholised wine - I got some from
alcoholfree.co.uk I find the fizzy ones are the best!
Also beer wise - alcohol free becks is nice  xxx

Well done on the tennis Jane! Really hope tax is easy on you.

Carrie sorry to hear you have a rough time after number 3. I still have to read up properly re herceptin but I think the common side effects are flu like symptoms for a couple of days and your heart has to be monitored.

My taste buds are all over the place just now. Why can’t a cup of coffee just taste like a cup of coffee?

Okay, I am going to stop moaning. :o)

Hi Gang

Well done Rosie for escaping…you’ll be in your own bed tonight!

I’m on day 12 after my last FEC. Feeling much better this weekend but boy it’s easy to overdo it & run out of energy. Also my stomach seems to really playing up. I’m getting emmissions from either end that seem like pure sulphur! Don’t know what’s going on! I reckon hubby will sleep in the car tonight! I’m busy attaching a sign…No Naked Flames…heavens…not nice but don’t really know what I can do about it ( rushes to open bedroom window).

Provided the gas cloud clears looking forward to a good week & being more sociable. must still get lots of rest too though, don’t want to end up unwell!

Hugs to everyone…is there a bench in bench land with an extractor hood?

Twinky x

An update…been thinking about what I ate/drank today. I had two glasses of a lambrusco type of drink at lunchtime…just looked at the bottle & it’s partially fermented grape must…the final part of fermentation is now clearly happening within me. Do not drink such a thing whilst on chemo…believe me it’s very very unpleasant. Just hoping it doesnt get worse or start any eruptions!

Twinky x

And yes it got worse. No sleep for me. Horrendous upset stomach…oh woe is me.

Twinky x

Can’t sleep either. De-alcoholised wine was rubbish so resorted to normal stuff which you just can’t beat. Only had a couple of glasses but now mind working overtime!!

Hope you get back to sleep Twinky and stomach settles xx
